Anthropic Fellows Program 2027 - AI Safety Research

Deadline Rolling, aim for late November 2026 for the January 2027 cohort 76 days left · Hosted by Anthropic · Published

The Anthropic Fellows Program funds people to stop reading about AI safety research and start doing it. Anthropic pays a weekly stipend of 3,850 USD (2,310 GBP or 4,300 CAD), adds benefits that vary by country and around 15,000 dollars a month for compute and other research costs, and pairs you with one of its own researchers for four months of full-time empirical work. The goal is a public output, usually a paper submission. Credentials matter less here than most research programmes: Anthropic says plainly that you do not need a PhD, prior machine learning experience or published papers, and past fellows have come from physics, mathematics, computer science and cybersecurity. What you do need is fluent Python, the ability to work 40 hours a week for the full four months, and work authorisation in the US, the UK or Canada, since no visas are sponsored for fellows. The programme now runs five workstreams, covering AI safety, AI security, ML systems and performance, reinforcement learning, and economics and policy under the Anthropic Institute. Applications are read on a rolling basis for the next cohort, expected to start in January 2027, so there is no single published cutoff to work back from.

What is the Anthropic Fellows Program?

The Anthropic Fellows Program is a four month research fellowship for people who want to do empirical AI research and need funding, a mentor and a reason to go full-time. Anthropic pays a weekly stipend of 3,850 USD, 2,310 GBP or 4,300 CAD depending on where you are based, adds benefits that vary by country, and covers roughly 15,000 dollars a month of compute and other research costs. You are matched with an Anthropic researcher who pitches project ideas, and you shape one of them into a piece of work aimed at a public output, normally a paper submission. Research runs on external infrastructure, meaning open-source models and public APIs, so you are not working inside Anthropic's systems and you are not an Anthropic employee.

The entry bar is unusual, and worth reading twice if you assumed a programme like this was closed to you. Anthropic states that it cares much more about your ability to execute research than about your credentials, and that you do not need a PhD, prior machine learning experience or published papers. Fellows have arrived from physics, mathematics, computer science and cybersecurity. What the postings do insist on is fluent Python, availability to work 40 hours a week for the full four months, and clear thinking on hard technical problems. The programme started as a pilot announced in December 2024, funding 10 to 15 fellows for six months on AI safety questions, and it has since grown into five parallel workstreams: AI Safety, AI Security, ML Systems and Performance, Reinforcement Learning, and the Anthropic Institute covering economics and policy. Duration tightened to four months along the way, and the stipend rose from the pilot's 2,100 dollars a week.

Then there is the line that decides eligibility for a lot of readers of this site. You must hold work authorisation in the US, the UK or Canada, and be located in that country for the whole programme. Anthropic is not currently able to sponsor visas for fellows, and it goes out of its way to say that the visa sponsorship language on its full-time job postings does not apply here. Remote fellows are accepted within those three countries, and there are shared workspaces in Berkeley, London and San Francisco where mentors visit. If you would need sponsorship, this one is not available to you, and it is better to know that before writing an application. Applications for the safety and security workstream are handled by Constellation, Anthropic's hiring partner, which also runs the Berkeley workspace.

On timing, there is no deadline to count down to. Anthropic runs several cohorts a year and reads applications on a rolling basis, with the next cohort expected to start in January 2027. As of mid September 2026 the ML Systems and Reinforcement Learning posting and the Anthropic Institute posting are both open, while the AI Safety and Security posting says applications are closed and will be updated when they reopen. So the practical move is to prepare now, apply to an open workstream if it fits, and watch the safety posting if it does not. Aim to be in the pipeline by late November 2026 if you want the January intake, treating that as a planning target rather than a published cutoff. Past fellows' work gives a fair sense of the range: agentic misalignment, subliminal learning, rapid response to jailbreaks, open-source circuit tracing, and security agents that found 4.6 million dollars of smart contract vulnerabilities. If you are weighing funded routes into AI research, the CHAI Research Fellowship guide and the Michigan AI Explorers Program guide cover two more. Everything official sits on Anthropic's own postings, with programme background on the Alignment Science Blog announcement.

Who can apply

Eligibility

Your progress 0 / 6
  • Work authorisation in the US, the UK or Canada
This is the gate that stops most applicants, and Anthropic states it twice. You must hold full-time work authorisation in one of those three countries and be located in that country for the duration of the programme. Anthropic is not currently able to sponsor visas for fellows, so an international applicant who would need sponsorship cannot be accepted, however strong the application.
  • Fluent Python
Listed under "candidates must be" on every workstream posting, with no qualifier. The projects are empirical and built on open-source models and public APIs, so code is the medium the whole programme runs in.
  • Available full-time for four months
The expectation is 40 hours a week for four months, with a possible extension. If you cannot commit to the full duration, Anthropic asks you to apply anyway and describe your constraints in the application, and says it reviews those case by case.
  • A strong technical background
Computer science, mathematics or physics are the fields named, and past fellows have also come from cybersecurity and other quantitative backgrounds. Anthropic is explicit that you do not need a PhD, prior ML experience or published papers to be competitive.
  • Genuine motivation for AI research and safety
The selection criteria ask whether you are motivated by making AI safe and beneficial, and whether you are excited to move into empirical AI research and would consider a full-time role at Anthropic later. The programme exists to move technical talent into the field, so this is assessed rather than assumed.
  • Able to work from Berkeley, London or remotely inside the three countries
Anthropic runs shared workspaces in Berkeley, California and in London, and a workspace in San Francisco for the capabilities-focused workstreams. Remote fellows in the US, the UK or Canada are accepted, and you will be asked about your availability to work from a workspace full-time or part-time.

What to prepare

Document checklist

Documents gathered 0 / 7
  • The workstream application form
AI Safety and AI Security applications go through a form run by Constellation, Anthropic's hiring partner for that workstream. The ML Systems and Reinforcement Learning workstream and the Anthropic Institute workstream take applications directly at the bottom of their own postings.
  • Resume or CV
Accepted as PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT or RTF on the postings that use the standard form. Keep it technical: the reviewers are looking for evidence you can build and ship things, not for job titles.
  • Your workstream preferences
Anthropic asks for preferences in the application because some workstreams add their own assessment steps. By default candidates are considered across all workstreams, so ranking rather than narrowing is usually the better move.
  • References
A reference check is part of the initial stage, before the technical assessments. Line up people who have seen you work on something hard rather than people with impressive titles.
  • Evidence of what you have built
Open-source contributions, reported CVEs or bug bounties, empirical machine learning projects, experience with large language models, work on distributed systems. Each workstream lists its own version of this, and it carries more weight here than formal credentials.
  • A note on your start date and constraints
If January 2027 does not work for you, say so in the application. Anthropic states it can sometimes accommodate fellows starting outside the usual cohort timelines.
  • Your location and work authorisation details
You will be asked where you are based and whether you can work from Berkeley or London. Since there is no visa sponsorship, this is checked early rather than late.
Step by step

How to apply

You need existing work authorisation in the US, the UK or Canada, and you need to be in that country while the programme runs. Anthropic sponsors no visas for fellows. Everything below is wasted effort if this line does not apply to you.
AI Safety and AI Security sit on one posting, ML Systems and Reinforcement Learning on another, and the Anthropic Institute economics and policy workstream on a third. You are asked for preferences rather than a single choice, and candidates are considered across workstreams by default.
As of September 2026 the AI Safety and Security posting says applications are closed and will be updated when they reopen. The ML Systems and Reinforcement Learning posting and the Anthropic Institute posting are both accepting applications on a rolling basis for a cohort expected to start in January 2027.
A resume, plus whatever shows you finish technical work: open-source contributions, CVEs or bug bounties, ML experiments, LLM work, systems engineering. Anthropic says it cares much more about your ability to execute research than about your credentials, so lead with artefacts.
For AI Safety and AI Security, complete the Constellation form linked from the posting, since the Greenhouse application alone does not count. For the other workstreams, apply at the bottom of the posting itself. Note in your application if the January 2027 start does not work for you.
The process runs as an initial application and reference check, then technical assessments and interviews, then a research discussion. Some workstreams add their own assessment steps, which is part of why the preference question is asked up front.
Selected fellows go through project selection and mentor matching. Anthropic mentors pitch project ideas and fellows shape the project with them, so arriving with a clear sense of which research area you want is worth more than a fixed agenda you will not budge from.

Now to late 2026
Applications are read on a rolling basis for the next cohort. Earlier is better, because places fill as strong candidates clear the process.
Late November 2026
A sensible planning target if you want the January 2027 cohort. Anthropic publishes no cutoff date, so this is a target rather than a deadline.
Through to December 2026
Reference check, technical assessments and interviews, then a research discussion with the team.
January 2027
The next cohort is expected to start. Project selection and mentor matching happen at the beginning.
Four months of research
Full-time empirical work at 40 hours a week, on open-source models and public APIs, with weekly mentor contact. Extension is possible.
After the programme
A public output, usually a paper submission. In previous cohorts 25 to 50 percent of fellows received a full-time offer from Anthropic.
Questions

FAQ

What is the Anthropic Fellows Program?

A funded research programme that pays technical people to work full-time for four months on an empirical AI research project with mentorship from an Anthropic researcher. Fellows use external infrastructure such as open-source models and public APIs, and the aim is a public output, usually a paper submission. It began as a pilot announced in December 2024 for a cohort of 10 to 15 fellows working on AI safety, and has since expanded into five workstreams covering safety, security, ML systems and performance, reinforcement learning, and economics and policy.

How much does the Anthropic Fellows Program pay?

The stipend is 3,850 USD, 2,310 GBP or 4,300 CAD per week, depending on where you are based, with benefits that vary by country. On top of that, fellows get funding for compute and other research expenses at roughly 15,000 dollars a month. The expectation is 40 hours a week across four months, with a possible extension. The pilot cohort paid 2,100 USD a week with about 10,000 dollars a month of research budget, so any figure you see in that range is from the older announcement rather than the current one.

Can international students apply for the Anthropic Fellows Program?

Only if they already hold work authorisation in the US, the UK or Canada and will be located in that country during the programme. Anthropic states clearly that it is not currently able to sponsor visas for fellows, and that the visa sponsorship policy on its full-time job postings does not apply to the Fellows Program. If you would need sponsorship to work in one of those three countries, you are not eligible, and no part of the application process changes that.

Do you need a PhD for the Anthropic Fellows Program?

No. Anthropic says directly that you do not need a PhD, prior machine learning experience or published papers, and that successful fellows have come from physics, mathematics, computer science, cybersecurity and other quantitative backgrounds. The programme was built for people moving into empirical AI research rather than for people already established in it. The published requirements are fluent Python, availability to work full-time, and a strong technical background.

When is the Anthropic Fellows Program deadline?

There is no published deadline. Anthropic runs multiple cohorts a year and reviews applications on a rolling basis, and the open postings say they are accepting applications for a cohort expected to start in January 2027. Late November 2026 is a reasonable planning target for that intake rather than an announced cutoff. An earlier blog announcement listed a 26 July close for a November 2026 cohort, which has passed, so treat dates in that post as historical.

Is the Anthropic Fellows Program a job at Anthropic?

No. Fellows are not officially employed by Anthropic, and the postings state that Anthropic's policies for full-time roles, including the office attendance expectation and visa sponsorship, do not apply to the programme. It is a fixed-term funded research fellowship with a stipend, a compute budget and a mentor. Anthropic also says it does not guarantee that any full-time offers will follow, although in previous cohorts 25 to 50 percent of fellows received one.

What do Anthropic Fellows actually work on?

Empirical projects aligned with Anthropic's research priorities, chosen with a mentor who pitches ideas. Past fellows worked on agentic misalignment, stress-testing 16 frontier models in simulated corporate settings; on subliminal learning, where models pass behavioural traits through unrelated data; on rapid response methods that block whole classes of jailbreaks after a handful of examples; on open-source circuit tracing for interpretability; and on security agents that identified 4.6 million dollars of blockchain smart contract vulnerabilities.

How competitive is the Anthropic Fellows Program?

Anthropic does not publish an acceptance rate or a current cohort size, so anyone quoting one is guessing. What it does publish is the outcome side: in one earlier cohort more than 80 percent of fellows produced papers, over 40 percent of the first cohort went on to join Anthropic full-time, and across previous cohorts 25 to 50 percent of fellows received a full-time offer. The selection runs through a reference check, technical assessments and interviews, and a research discussion.

Netflix Internship Program 2027 - Paid 12-Week Roles
Netflix runs a paid summer internship program in the United States, India, Poland and Japan, built around a 12-week placement that embeds you in a team rather than parking you on a side project. Most openings sit in Engineering and Data and Insights, with others across Content, Finance and Strategy, Marketing and Program Management. Netflix states the pay range on its own postings: the market range for internships is typically $40 to $85 an hour on the current Winter 2027 listings, quoted as total compensation. Eligibility is short. You must be enrolled at a university studying for a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and the program is meant for students going back to school for at least a semester afterwards. There is no closing date. Roles post from mid-August to early September and the intern recruiting season runs to the end of March, with applications reviewed as they arrive.
