Kellogg Faculty Visiting Fellowship 2027 - Notre Dame
The Kellogg Fellowship for faculty gives assistant, associate and full professors a semester or a full academic year at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, part of the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. You spend that time on your own research into global democracy, with a stipend set by your academic rank, research and travel funding, a round trip to Notre Dame and medical insurance. If your university keeps paying you during leave, Kellogg can instead cover up to 50% of your home salary, capped at its own rank-based stipend. Scholars from any country can apply, and you choose between the fall semester, the spring semester or the whole 2027-2028 year. Applications run through Interfolio from 1 August to 1 October 2026, and your three recommendation letters are due by 7 October.
What is the Kellogg Faculty Visiting Fellowship?
The Kellogg Fellowship for faculty is one of the few funded visiting posts in the US built around a single question: how democracy works, and fails, around the world. The Kellogg Institute for International Studies at Notre Dame has hosted visiting scholars for decades, and its faculty track is aimed at people who already have a career. You might be an assistant professor who needs a clear semester to turn fieldwork into a book, or a full professor looking for a year away from committee work. Either way the offer is the same: time, money, and a building full of people who work on the same problems you do.
Pay is the part that confuses people. Unlike the postdoctoral track, which advertises a flat $75,000, the faculty stipend is set by academic rank and Kellogg does not publish the scale. You have two ways to take it. Notre Dame can pay you directly, which also puts you on its medical, dental and vision cover. Or, if your university is keeping you on salary during a sabbatical, the two institutions can sign an agreement under which Kellogg pays up to half your home salary, never more than its own rank-based stipend. Ask your department about that route early, because the paperwork sits with your employer, not with you.
The flexibility on length is the other big draw. You can come for the fall semester, the spring semester or the full 2027-2028 academic year, which makes the fellowship far easier to fit around a teaching contract than most year-long residencies. Whatever term you pick, Kellogg expects you on site: at the weekly seminar and lecture series, giving at least one talk on your work, and crediting the Institute in what you publish from the stay. Applications for 2027-2028 close on 1 October 2026, with referee letters due on 7 October.
One naming note before you apply. Searches for "Kellogg Fellowship" also bring up Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, which runs its own MBA awards and has nothing to do with this programme. ✓International research on global democracyYour project has to deal with global democracy, the Kellogg Institute's core research theme, and it has to be international in scope. The selection committee scores that connection as a criterion of its own.

✓A social science PhD, ideallyThe most competitive applicants hold a PhD or equivalent in a social science discipline such as political science, sociology, economics or anthropology. Kellogg says it considers other disciplines only in exceptional cases.

What is the Kellogg Faculty Visiting Fellowship?
The Kellogg Faculty Visiting Fellowship is a residential research fellowship at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, part of the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame. How much does the Kellogg Fellowship pay faculty?
Kellogg does not publish a figure for faculty. Pay is described as competitive compensation determined by academic rank, so a full professor receives more than an assistant professor. You can be paid directly by Notre Dame or, through an agreement between your university and Notre Dame, receive salary support of up to 50% of your home salary, capped at the Kellogg stipend for your rank. The stipend is paid in equal monthly instalments across the appointment, for example nine payments for a full academic year. Research and travel funding, a round trip to Notre Dame and medical insurance come on top.
When is the Kellogg Fellowship deadline for 2027-2028?
Applications opened on 1 August 2026 and close on 1 October 2026. Your three recommendation letters must be in Interfolio no later than Wednesday 7 October 2026. The official page gives no closing time, so submit a day early to be safe.
Can I apply for a Kellogg faculty visiting fellowship for one semester only?
Yes. The faculty track offers three options: the full academic year from August to May, the fall semester from August to December, and the spring semester from January to May. State your preferred term in your cover letter. The postdoctoral track, by contrast, is a full academic year only.

Does the Kellogg Institute provide housing for faculty visiting fellows?
Fellows can lease a furnished apartment on campus, subject to availability. You rent it rather than live there free, so plan to pay for it from your stipend or salary. If no apartment is free, you find housing in the Notre Dame and South Bend area yourself.
