Brown University Scholarships 2027 - Need-Based Aid
Brown University Scholarships 2027 are the need-based awards Brown hands to undergraduates entering in Fall 2027, and there is no merit competition anywhere in the process. Brown states it plainly: no aid is given for academic achievement, athletic ability or any other form of merit. What Brown does instead is meet 100 per cent of demonstrated financial need for every admitted undergraduate, and package it with no loans at all. That policy is the Brown Promise, and it means your entire award is gift aid that never has to be repaid. The income bands do most of the work. If your family earns under $60,000 a year with assets under $100,000, your parent contribution is zero and the scholarship covers tuition, fees, housing and meals, so you arrive on campus with a $0 student account balance. If your family earns up to $125,000 with typical assets, full tuition is covered, which is $74,568 against a 2026-27 cost of attendance of $99,984. Above that, aid still scales with real need, and Brown stopped counting home equity in your primary residence back in 2022-23. Admission is need-blind for every first-year applicant, US and international alike, since the Class of 2029. The dates that matter for Fall 2027 entry are 1 November 2026 for Early Decision with aid forms due 2 November, and 5 January 2027 for Regular Decision with aid forms due 1 February 2027.
What are Brown University Scholarships 2027?
Brown University Scholarships 2027 are need-based awards, full stop. There is no merit competition, no scholarship shortlist and no separate application to win. Brown puts it in one line on its own aid pages: no aid is offered for academic achievement, athletic ability or any other form of merit. What you get instead is a promise that most universities cannot make. Brown meets 100 per cent of demonstrated financial need for every admitted undergraduate, and it packages none of that need with loans. Your offer is gift aid you never repay, plus a campus job.
The income bands tell you most of what you need to know before you file anything. Under $60,000 a year with assets under $100,000, your parent contribution is zero and the scholarship covers tuition, fees, housing and meals, so you start the year with a $0 balance on your student account. Up to $125,000 with typical assets, full tuition is covered, which at the 2026-27 rate is $74,568 out of a $99,984 cost of attendance. Past $125,000 there is no cliff. The award keeps scaling against what the CSS Profile says your family can actually pay, and since 2022-23 the equity in your family home is left out of that sum entirely. Roughly 49 per cent of the Class of 2029 landed on aid, with an average family responsibility of $32,160.
Two structural facts change how you should approach the application. First, admission is need-blind for every first-year applicant, US and international alike, from the Class of 2029 onward, which Brown funded through a $120 million campaign. Asking for aid cannot damage a first-year application, so ask. Transfers are the exception and are read need-aware. Second, the paperwork splits by citizenship. US citizens and permanent residents file the FAFSA under code 003401 and the CSS Profile under code 3189. International applicants file the Profile only, and back it with tax returns or employer earnings statements through IDOC. Brown grants no CSS Profile fee waivers and will not take the ISFAA form in its place.
For Fall 2027 entry the calendar is tight at both ends. The CSS Profile opens 1 October 2026. Early Decision closes 1 November 2026 with aid forms due the next day and results in mid-December, which is a real trade: you get an answer early, but you commit before you can compare any other school's offer. Regular Decision closes 5 January 2027 with aid forms due 1 February and offers landing in late March or early April, ahead of the 1 May reply date. One last thing worth planning for. Outside scholarships knock down your summer earnings expectation and campus job first, then start cutting the Brown Scholarship dollar for dollar, so chasing a large external award is worth less at Brown than it looks. If you are weighing need-based aid against a school that pays for merit instead, the USC Merit Scholarships 2026 guide covers the opposite model. Current figures and forms are on the Brown Undergraduate Admission financial aid page.
Eligibility
-
✓Admission to Brown as an undergraduateBrown University Scholarships exist only for students admitted to the undergraduate college, so the aid application rides alongside the admission application rather than standing on its own. Apply by 1 November 2026 for Early Decision, which is binding, or by 5 January 2027 for Regular Decision. Aid is not a separate competition and there is no scholarship shortlist.
-
✓Demonstrated financial need on the CSS ProfileEligibility is determined solely on financial need. Brown reads the CSS Profile (code 3189) alongside the FAFSA where it applies, calculates what your family can contribute, and awards the gap between that figure and the full cost of attendance. No academic, athletic or artistic record moves the number. The average family responsibility for the Class of 2029 came out at $32,160, but the spread runs from $0 upward.
-
✓Aid forms filed by your round deadlineEarly Decision applicants file the CSS Profile and the FAFSA by 2 November 2026. Regular Decision applicants file both by 1 February 2027. The CSS Profile opens on 1 October 2026. Miss the deadline for your round and Brown can still review you, but the offer may not arrive with your admission decision, which is the point at which most families need it.
-
✓Citizenship route determines which forms you fileUS citizens and permanent residents file both the FAFSA (federal school code 003401) and the CSS Profile. International applicants file the CSS Profile only, since the FAFSA is not open to them, plus tax documents or employer statements of earnings through IDOC. Applicants from Iran and North Korea cannot use the CSS Profile and should email [email protected] directly.
-
✓Need-blind for first-year applicants, need-aware for transfersBrown practices need-blind admission for all first-year applicants, including international citizens, from the Class of 2029 onward. Asking for aid cannot hurt a first-year application. Transfer applicants are the exception: their financial need is considered as part of the admission decision, so the calculus is different if you are transferring in.
-
✓No merit, academic or athletic scholarship routeBrown does not offer aid based on academic achievement, athletic ability or any other form of merit, and as an Ivy League member it awards no athletic scholarships at all. If your family shows no need on the CSS Profile, there is no second door into Brown funding. Students in that position should target external awards instead.
-
✓Reapply for aid every year you are enrolledThe Brown University Scholarship is not locked in for four years at a fixed figure. You refile the CSS Profile and FAFSA each spring, and the award is recalculated against your family circumstances and the current cost of attendance. Aid usually holds steady when your finances do, and it rises when they worsen.

Document checklist
-
✓CSS Profile (code 3189)The core institutional aid form, filed at the College Board from 1 October 2026. Brown does not provide fee waivers for the CSS Profile, and it will not accept the ISFAA form or a paper copy in its place. Due 2 November 2026 for Early Decision and 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.
-
✓FAFSA (federal school code 003401)Required from US citizens and permanent residents, and the gateway to Pell Grants, SEOG and most state grants, which are layered into the package before the Brown Scholarship fills the rest. International applicants do not file it. Same round deadlines as the CSS Profile.
-
✓Custodial parent tax returns through IDOCYour 2025 federal tax returns and W-2s, or a non-tax-filer statement, uploaded to the College Board IDOC service when Brown requests them. Brown does not ask every family for an IDOC packet, so wait for the request rather than sending documents unprompted.
-
✓Noncustodial parent tax returnsWhere your parents are separated or divorced, Brown asks for the noncustodial parent's 2025 income tax returns as well. Families where contact with that parent is not possible should raise a waiver request with the financial aid office early rather than at the deadline.
-
✓Employer statement of earnings (international families)If tax returns do not exist in your country, Brown accepts an employer statement documenting annual earnings for each working parent. Documents in another language need an English translation, and figures should be given in local currency with the currency named.
-
✓Common Application or Coalition ApplicationThe admission application itself, submitted by 1 November 2026 for Early Decision or 5 January 2027 for Regular Decision. Aid cannot be assessed without it, and the two files are reviewed on separate tracks because admission is need-blind.
-
✓Business or farm supplement, if applicableFamilies who own a business or farm may be asked for a supplemental schedule detailing the entity's income and assets. Have the prior-year business returns ready before the CSS Profile deadline, since this is the request that most often stalls a file.
-
✓Verification documents, if selectedSome FAFSA filers are selected for federal verification, which means confirming income, household size and tax data before federal funds can be released. Respond quickly. Verification does not change the Brown Scholarship figure, but it can hold up disbursement at the start of term.

FAQ
Does Brown University offer merit scholarships?
No. Brown says outright that it does not offer aid based on academic achievement, athletic ability or any other form of merit, and eligibility is determined solely on financial need. As an Ivy League member it awards no athletic scholarships either. Every dollar of Brown University Scholarship money is need-based, which is the opposite of a school like USC where the tiers are decided on the strength of your application. If your family shows no assessed need, Brown has no second funding route, and external awards are the realistic target.
What is the income limit for free tuition at Brown University?
Families earning up to $125,000 a year with typical assets have full tuition covered, which is $74,568 at the 2026-27 rate. Below that, families earning under $60,000 with assets under $100,000 pay nothing at all: the scholarship covers tuition, fees, housing and meals, and those students arrive with a $0 student account balance. Neither figure is a hard cutoff for aid generally. Above $125,000 the award simply scales with what the CSS Profile shows you can contribute.
How much financial aid does Brown University give?
Brown commits to meeting 100 per cent of demonstrated financial need for every eligible undergraduate, so the award is whatever separates your family contribution from the full cost of attendance, which is $99,984 for 2026-27. About 49 per cent of the Class of 2029 received need-based aid, and the average family responsibility for that class was $32,160. Packages at the highest need end cover the entire $99,984.
Is Brown need-blind for international students?
Yes. Beginning with the Class of 2029, Brown practices need-blind admission for all first-year applicants, including international citizens, funded by a $120 million fundraising effort that closed in 2024. Brown meets 100 per cent of demonstrated need for admitted international students on the same terms as domestic ones. International applicants file the CSS Profile but not the FAFSA. Transfer applicants of any citizenship remain need-aware, so financial need does factor into those admission decisions.
What is the Brown Promise?
The Brown Promise is the policy that removed every packaged loan from every Brown financial aid award. Your package is built from scholarship and a work-study or campus employment component, with $0 of demonstrated need met by loans at any income level. You can still borrow federally if you choose to, but nothing in the offer letter obliges you to. Brown pairs it with two other moves worth knowing: home equity in your primary residence has been excluded from the family contribution calculation since 2022-23, and the summer earnings expectation is $1,000 lower for students with a $0 parent contribution.
What are the Brown University financial aid deadlines for Fall 2027 entry?
Early Decision applicants submit the admission application by 1 November 2026 and both the CSS Profile and the FAFSA by 2 November 2026, with results in mid-December. Regular Decision applicants submit the application by 5 January 2027 and the aid forms by 1 February 2027, with results in late March or early April. The CSS Profile itself opens on 1 October 2026. Filing on time is what gets your aid offer delivered with the admission decision instead of after it.
How do outside scholarships affect a Brown aid package?
Outside awards reduce your expected summer earnings and student employment first, which is the part of the package you work for, so the first few thousand dollars genuinely help you. Anything beyond that reduces the Brown University Scholarship dollar for dollar. You can redirect surplus outside money towards a computer purchase or ask to defer it to a later year. Named endowed scholarships work differently and change nothing: they only record which fund pays for the Brown Scholarship you already hold.
Do you need the CSS Profile and the FAFSA for Brown scholarships?
US citizens and permanent residents file both, the CSS Profile under code 3189 and the FAFSA under federal school code 003401. International applicants file the CSS Profile alone. Brown will not accept the ISFAA form or a paper copy of the Profile as a substitute, and it does not grant CSS Profile fee waivers. Some families are then asked for tax returns through IDOC, including a noncustodial parent's returns where parents are separated or divorced.
