Capital University Scholarship 2027 - $80,000 Award
The Capital University Scholarship is not one award you compete for. It is a stack of awards that Capital University in Columbus, Ohio attaches to your admission decision, and the part that matters most is automatic. Every accepted full-time undergraduate working on a first degree receives the Main Street Scholarship, a minimum of $80,000 applied over four years, or $20,000 a year for up to eight fall and spring semesters. The Capital Merit Scholarship then stacks on top of it, and your weighted high school GPA alone decides the tier: $2,000 a year at 3.0, $4,000 at 3.2, $6,000 at 3.5, $7,000 at 3.8, and $8,000 at 4.0 and above. A first-year student therefore starts somewhere between $22,000 and $28,000 a year. No separate scholarship application exists, no essay is requested, and Capital says the offer reaches you on the same day you are admitted. Transfer students follow their own cumulative college GPA ladder worth $20,000 to $25,000 a year, and international undergraduates are quoted a partial merit package starting at $29,000 a year. What is the Capital University Scholarship 2027?
The Capital University Scholarship is best understood as a floor plus a ladder. The floor is the Main Street Scholarship, which Capital gives to every accepted full-time undergraduate working toward a first degree: a minimum of $80,000 applied over four years, or at least $20,000 each year for up to eight fall and spring semesters. The ladder is the Capital Merit Scholarship, which stacks on top and is decided by one number, your weighted high school GPA. At 3.0 you add the 1830 Award worth $2,000 a year, at 3.2 the Dean's Award at $4,000, at 3.5 the Trustees' Award at $6,000, at 3.8 the Provost's Award at $7,000, and at 4.0 and above the President's Award at $8,000. Add the two together and a first-year student starts between $22,000 and $28,000 a year.
Nobody applies for any of that directly, which is the unusual part and the reason this guide has no essay prompts or reference requirements in it. Capital says your admission application is your scholarship application, and that the merit offer reaches you on the same day you are admitted. The practical consequence is that the work you would spend on a scholarship essay elsewhere goes into the admission file instead: an accurate transcript sent officially, the free Capital or Common Application in before 1 December 2026 for priority scholarship consideration, and a FAFSA between December and 1 March 2027 if you want anything need-based added. Test scores are genuinely optional here, since the merit ladder ignores them entirely.
Where the numbers change is in who you are. Transfer students are read off a cumulative college GPA instead, from the $20,000 floor up to $25,000 a year at 3.75 and above, and can add the Phi Theta Kappa award or the Capital Preferred Pathway award if they come from Columbus State, Zane State or Washington State College of Ohio. International undergraduates get a partial merit package that Capital's international scholarships page starts at $29,000 a year with some help toward campus living costs, though the same university also states flatly that it offers international students no need-based aid and no full scholarships. Ohio residents in the other direction can go further than anyone: a 3.5 GPA, a FAFSA and a household income of $60,000 or less unlocks the Capital Gateway Scholarship, which covers full tuition and university fees after other grants are applied.
Now the part that decides whether any of this works for you. Tuition for 2026-2027 is $45,100 a year and the Main Street award cannot touch room and board, so a student on the top merit tier still has roughly $17,600 of tuition and fees to find plus housing at $6,800 to $11,400 and a meal plan at up to $7,000. Need-based grants are added to merit money rather than swapped for it, and the stackable awards are worth chasing precisely because they attack different parts of the bill: the Comet Community Award goes at room and board, the Sibling and Lutheran Heritage awards at tuition, ROTC at both. Read your offer letter against the published tables, because the tiers are specific enough that an error is easy to spot.
