What is the Gates Scholarship?
The Gates Scholarship gives 300 high school seniors a year the money that other aid does not reach. For a student with real financial need at an expensive private university, that gap can be enormous.

Search for this scholarship today and you will still find recent-looking articles, and even some older pages on official-looking sites, listing the old four-ethnicity rule. None of which makes it easy. Three hundred awards against a national pool of Pell-eligible seniors is brutal arithmetic, and the 3.3 GPA floor is not what separates candidates, since the programme describes its ideal applicant as sitting in the top 10 percent of their class. What it says it actually weighs is leadership shown through community service or extracurricular work, alongside emotional maturity, motivation and perseverance. Two practical points then decide whether a strong candidate even gets read. The 15 September deadline falls early, before most college application deadlines, so this needs finishing first rather than last.
