Yale University Scholarship 2027 - Need-Based Aid
The Yale University Scholarship 2027 is not a competition you enter, and that catches people out. Yale awards every dollar of undergraduate aid on financial need alone, and the Yale Scholarship is the grant portion of that package: money that never has to be repaid, sized to what your family can actually afford rather than to how impressive your application is. The average annual need-based scholarship is $75,220. Around 80% of US families with children qualify for grants covering at least the full cost of tuition, 21% pay nothing whatsoever, and 88% of Yale College graduates leave with no student loan debt. Two policies make that work. Admission is need-blind, so your family's ability to pay is not a factor in the decision for any applicant anywhere in the world. And once you are in, Yale meets 100% of demonstrated financial need regardless of your citizenship or immigration status, without putting loans in the offer. The income markers are published and worth memorising: below $100,000 with typical assets and the expected family contribution is normally zero, which covers tuition, fees, housing, food and travel, plus hospitalization insurance and a $2,000 start-up grant in your first year. Below $200,000 and tuition is typically covered. For entry in autumn 2027 the real deadline is the admission one, 1 November 2026 for Single-Choice Early Action and QuestBridge, 2 January 2027 for Regular Decision, with the FAFSA, CSS Profile and supporting documents on separate priority dates.
What is the Yale University Scholarship?
The Yale University Scholarship is the grant that carries most of the weight in a Yale College financial aid offer, and the most useful thing to understand about it is that you cannot apply for it. There is no essay, no separate portal, no committee weighing your extracurriculars against someone else's. Yale awards every dollar of undergraduate aid on financial need, works out what your family can reasonably contribute, and covers the gap with a scholarship grant that never has to be repaid. The average annual award is $75,220, which for most families is the difference between Yale being a fantasy and Yale being cheaper than the state university down the road.
Two policies hold the whole thing up. The first is need-blind admission: your family's ability to pay is not a factor in the decision, for any applicant, anywhere in the world. Very few universities extend that to international students, and Yale does. The second is that aid offers meet 100% of demonstrated financial need regardless of citizenship or immigration status, without loans. Yale does not put debt in an initial offer, and 88% of Yale College graduates leave with none at all. The published income markers are blunt enough to be worth memorising. Under $100,000 with typical assets and your family usually pays nothing, an offer that covers tuition, fees, housing, food and travel, and adds hospitalization insurance and a $2,000 start-up grant in the first year. Under $200,000 with typical assets and tuition is normally covered outright. Roughly 80% of US families with children qualify for grants covering at least the cost of tuition.
Pay attention to the word typical in those sentences, because it does real work. Yale's counsellors assess income, assets, family size and unusual circumstances together, and a family under $100,000 with significant property or investments can still be asked to contribute. What the numbers are measured against is the full cost of attendance, not the tuition line: for 2026-27 that is $72,500 tuition, $185 in student activity fees, $12,080 housing, $9,520 food, plus standard estimates of $1,000 for books and $2,700 for personal expenses, with travel on top and varying by where you live. If the cost rises in later years, your aid rises with it, and US citizens and permanent residents are reassessed each year on tax information from two years prior.
For entry in autumn 2027, the calendar is the part people get wrong. The scholarship follows admission, so the deadline that actually decides your chances is the admission one: 1 November 2026 for Single-Choice Early Action and the QuestBridge National College Match, 2 January 2027 for Regular Decision. Yale is explicit that no round gives you an advantage. The aid paperwork runs on its own priority dates, 1 November 2026 for QuestBridge and for Early Action from US citizens and permanent residents, 1 December 2026 for international citizens in Early Action, 15 February 2027 for Regular Decision and 1 April 2027 for transfers, and it means the CSS Profile, the FAFSA, and tax documents sent through IDOC. Miss a priority date and you are still eligible, and Yale states that offers are not reduced for late submission, though you may be waiting on a number while other admits already have theirs. If you are applying to Yale at graduate level instead, funding runs through the individual school, and the Yale World Fellows Program guide and Yale Peace Fellowship guide cover two of the mid-career routes. The official checklist sits on the Yale Undergraduate Financial Aid prospective applicants page.
Eligibility
-
✓Admission to Yale CollegeThe Yale University Scholarship only exists inside a financial aid offer, and aid offers only go to admitted students. There is no separate scholarship competition, no shortlist and no way in without an offer of admission first. Everything else on this list sits behind that one gate.
-
✓Demonstrated financial needYale awards all undergraduate aid on need, assessed by a financial aid counsellor looking at income, assets, family size and unusual circumstances together. A family with no demonstrated need receives no Yale Scholarship no matter how strong the application was, and there are no merit or athletic awards to fall back on.
-
✓Applying for aid on the admission applicationYou indicate interest in financial aid on the Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge application. For international citizens that box is the trigger for Undergraduate Financial Aid to contact you with your document list, so ticking it matters more than it looks.
-
✓Financial information for both parentsYale requires financial information from both parents even where they are divorced or separated. A waiver of the noncustodial parent's information can be petitioned for in genuine extenuating circumstances, using the CSS Profile noncustodial waiver request.
-
✓Any citizenship or immigration statusYale states that aid offers meet 100% of demonstrated need regardless of a student's citizenship or immigration status, and that need-blind admission applies to any student anywhere in the world. International students, permanent residents and undocumented applicants are all inside the policy, not exceptions to it.
-
✓Full-time enrolment in Yale CollegeThe scholarship is for undergraduates in Yale College. Graduate and professional school students are funded through their own schools on completely different terms. Eli Whitney students are charged by credit load and need at least 1.5 credits in a semester to be eligible for aid.
-
✓Reapplying every yearAid is not locked in at admission. US citizens and permanent residents have their circumstances reassessed annually using tax information from two years prior, and cost of attendance increases are matched by increases in the aid offer, so the award tracks your family rather than freezing.

Document checklist
-
✓The CSS ProfileThe College Board form Yale uses to assess need in detail, well beyond what the FAFSA captures. Filed online, and the starting point for your document checklist rather than the end of it.
-
✓The FAFSAThe Free Application for Federal Student Aid, submitted for US citizens and eligible non-citizens to determine federal aid alongside the Yale assessment. File it online at studentaid.gov before sending anything through IDOC.
-
✓Parent and student tax returnsForm 1040 for both, and where no federal return was filed, a Non-Tax Filer's Statement instead. US citizens living abroad have to supply tax and income documentation from every applicable country, not just the US.
-
✓W-2s and 1040 schedulesParent and student W-2s, plus Schedules 1, 2 and 3 and Schedules A, B, C, D, E and F as they apply to your family. Business owners add Form 1065, 1120-S or 1120 and Schedule K-1.
-
✓Noncustodial parent materialsA separate set of requirements where parents are divorced, separated or unmarried. Start early, because chasing a parent who is out of contact is the single most common reason a Yale aid file sits incomplete past the priority date.
-
✓IDOC submissionAfter the CSS Profile, everything else goes to Yale through the College Board IDOC service, which is the preferred submission method. Documents emailed elsewhere slow the file down rather than speeding it up.
-
✓Your admission application and test scoresOne application only per cycle, through the Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge, plus recommendation letters, a school report with transcript, and ACT or SAT scores, which Yale requires from first-year and transfer applicants.
-
✓The applicant status portal checklistOnce you have expressed interest in aid, a personalised checklist appears in your status portal. New items get added during the review, so check it regularly rather than assuming the list you saw in November is final.

FAQ
What is the Yale Scholarship?
The grant portion of a Yale College financial aid offer, funded by Yale itself and never repaid. It is awarded purely on demonstrated financial need after a counsellor assesses income, assets, family size and any unusual circumstances. The average annual need-based scholarship is $75,220, and offers are built without loans, so the number you see is money you keep rather than debt with a delay attached.
Does Yale give full scholarships?
In effect, yes, for families with enough need. Yale meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for every admitted undergraduate, and families with incomes below $100,000 and typical assets normally receive a zero parent share offer, which covers tuition, fees, housing, food and travel outright. Around 21% of Yale students come from families who pay nothing at all. What Yale does not have is a full-ride prize you can win on merit.
Does Yale offer merit scholarships?
No. Every dollar of undergraduate financial aid at Yale is awarded on the basis of financial need, in the form of scholarships rather than loans. There are no academic merit awards and no athletic scholarships, which is standard across the Ivy League. A family with no demonstrated need pays the full cost of attendance regardless of how strong the application was, so treat outside scholarships as the merit route.
Is Yale free for families earning under $100,000?
For most of them, yes. Yale publishes two markers: families with incomes below $100,000 and typical assets usually pay nothing, and families below $200,000 with typical assets usually have tuition covered in full. Assets matter as much as income here, which is why the word typical is doing real work in both sentences. A family under $100,000 sitting on substantial property or investments may still be asked for a contribution.
Is Yale need-blind for international students?
Yes. Yale states that a family's ability to pay is not a factor in the admissions process for any student, anywhere in the world, and that aid offers meet 100% of demonstrated need regardless of citizenship or immigration status. International applicants indicate their interest in aid on the admission application and are then contacted directly by Undergraduate Financial Aid with a document list. One trap: Yale College does not accept the ISFAA in place of its own forms.
How much does Yale cost in 2026-27?
The published estimate is $72,500 tuition, a $185 student activity fee, $12,080 housing and $9,520 food, which is the billed portion. Yale then adds standardised estimates of $1,000 for books and course materials and $2,700 for personal expenses, plus travel that varies with where you live. Aid is calculated against that whole figure, not just the tuition line, and any future increase in the cost of attendance is matched by an increase in your aid.
What GPA do you need for a Yale scholarship?
None, because the scholarship is not academic. There is no GPA threshold, no minimum test score and no scholarship application to be judged on. Your grades matter enormously for getting admitted to Yale College, and admission is the only gate the scholarship sits behind. Once you are in, the size of the award is decided by your family's finances.
What is the Yale financial aid deadline for 2027?
Two sets of dates run in parallel. Admission closes 1 November 2026 for Single-Choice Early Action and QuestBridge, and 2 January 2027 for Regular Decision. Aid priority dates for the 2027-28 year are 1 November 2026 for QuestBridge and for Early Action from US citizens and permanent residents, 1 December 2026 for international citizens applying Early Action, 15 February 2027 for Regular Decision, and 1 April 2027 for transfers.
Do you have to pay back the Yale Scholarship?
No. Yale awards aid as scholarship grants that never need to be repaid, and it does not require students to take loans, so loans are not included in initial offers at all. Some families still choose to borrow for part of their share, and a financial aid counsellor will help with that, but nothing in the standard offer is debt. Around 88% of Yale College graduates finish with no student loan debt.
