Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship 2027 - Full Ride

Deadline 15 December 2026 (Fall 2027 entry, no exceptions) 93 days left · Hosted by Eastern Michigan University · Published

The Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship is the largest award Eastern Michigan University hands an incoming first-year student, covering full tuition and room and board for four years at a package EMU values at approximately $100,000. It is the one first-year award at EMU that is genuinely competitive: the Emerald Scholarship and the 4WARD Graduation Scholarship are awarded to anyone who meets the criteria, while the Presidential runs a separate application, an interview round, and a fixed cohort. Presidential Scholars are active members of The Honors College at EMU, so the award carries an academic community with it rather than just a tuition credit. The application for the class entering Fall 2027 is open now and closes on 15 December 2026, a date EMU states it will not extend.

What is the Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship?

The Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship is the biggest award EMU gives an incoming first-year student, and the only first-year award at the university you actually have to compete for. It covers full tuition and room and board for four years, a package Eastern Michigan values at roughly $100,000. Everything else in EMU's first-year lineup is automatic: hit the GPA band and the Emerald Scholarship arrives with your admission letter, opt in with a 3.0 and the 4WARD Graduation Scholarship covers your last two years of tuition. The Presidential is different. There is a separate application, a December cut-off, and an interview in February that decides the cohort.

The academic gate has two doors, and the wider one is the GPA-only route. A cumulative high school GPA of 3.85 or higher qualifies you with no SAT or ACT score required. If your GPA sits between 3.5 and 3.84, you need a 25 composite ACT or a 1200 SAT on Critical Reading plus Math to stay in the running. Below 3.5 there is no test score that rescues the application. That structure is worth reading carefully if you are a junior, because it means a semester of GPA repair can be worth more to you than another test sitting.

The deadline runs on one date and it covers more than the scholarship form. By 15 December 2026 you need the EMU admission application filed, all official transcripts in, any required test scores delivered, and the Presidential Scholarship Application submitted with its supporting materials. Eastern Michigan says no exceptions will be made. The other requirement people miss is the visit: you must come to campus at least once during the 2026 calendar year, though EMU counts its virtual honors sessions toward that, so applicants who cannot reach Ypsilanti have a real route. Those sessions run through October, November and early December, and they are also where current Presidential Scholars and Honors College staff explain what a strong application looks like. Invitations to interview go out by 15 January 2027, and interviews are held on 6 February 2027.

Winning it changes what the next four years cost, and it also commits you to a shape of student life. Presidential Scholars are active members of The Honors College, and the award only renews if you carry 15 credit hours each fall and winter semester, hold a cumulative EMU GPA of 3.3, and live in an on-campus community for all four years. You cannot hold it alongside the Emerald Scholarship or any other EMU first-year award, since the university allows one of those per student, and it applies to fall and winter semesters of a first bachelor's degree only. One gap worth closing yourself: EMU publishes no citizenship rule on this award, even though it publishes one on neighbouring awards, so international applicants should email undergraduate admissions rather than assume either way. If you are weighing similar university-run full rides, the Miami University Presidential Fellows guide covers an Ohio equivalent, the Boston University Presidential Scholarship guide a partial-tuition merit award at a private research university, and the University of Michigan-Dearborn Scholarship guide another Michigan option. Confirm current terms on the EMU Presidential Scholarship page.

Who can apply

Eligibility

Your progress 0 / 7
  • Incoming first-year student for Fall 2027
You must be a high school senior or incoming freshman entering EMU in Fall 2027, and you must be a high school graduate in either 2026 or 2027. Eastern Michigan University must also be the first institution you attend after high school, so transfer applicants and students already holding college credit from a prior enrolment are outside the award.
  • 3.85 high school GPA, with no test score needed
The simplest route in. A cumulative high school GPA of 3.85 or higher qualifies you with no SAT or ACT requirement at all. EMU waives the test score entirely at this GPA level, which matters because most of its other merit awards now attach test scores to the higher amounts.
  • Or a 3.5 to 3.84 GPA plus a qualifying test score
If your cumulative high school GPA sits between 3.5 and 3.84, you need a 25 composite ACT or a 1200 SAT, counted on Critical Reading plus Math. Below a 3.5 cumulative GPA there is no test score that opens the Presidential Scholarship.
  • Admission application and transcripts in by 15 December 2026
You have to apply for admission to Eastern Michigan University and submit all official transcripts and test scores by 15 December 2026. The scholarship application cannot even be started until your EMU admission application exists, so leaving both to the same week is the most common way applicants lose the award.
  • Separate Presidential Scholarship application by the same date
The Presidential Scholarship Application and every required supporting item must reach EMU by 15 December 2026. Eastern Michigan states plainly that no exceptions will be made to this deadline, so treat it as a hard cut rather than a target.
  • A campus visit during the 2026 calendar year
You must visit Eastern Michigan University at least once during the 2026 calendar year. An official campus tour or an open house counts, and so does one of the virtual honors sessions EMU schedules for prospective Presidential applicants, which is the workable route if you live far from Ypsilanti.
  • Traditional first-year student under age 21
EMU restricts all of its first-year scholarships, the Presidential included, to traditional first-year students under the age of 21. Returning adult learners and post-bachelor students are directed to other funding.

Document checklist

Documents gathered 0 / 7
  • EMU application for undergraduate admission
Submitted at emich.edu/apply. This has to come first, because the Presidential Scholarship Application only opens to students who already have an EMU admission application on file.
  • Official high school transcripts
Sent directly from your school, showing the cumulative GPA that puts you on either the 3.85 route or the 3.5 to 3.84 route. Due by 15 December 2026 along with everything else.
  • Official ACT or SAT score report
Only required if your cumulative GPA falls between 3.5 and 3.84, where you need a 25 composite ACT or a 1200 SAT on Critical Reading plus Math. At a 3.85 GPA or above you can skip this entirely.
  • Presidential Scholarship Application
The separate scholarship form, hosted on the EMU enrolment portal at enrollment.emich.edu. The portal is the application route, not the place to read the terms; the award rules live on the EMU admissions page.
  • Record of your 2026 campus visit
Your tour, open house, or virtual honors session registration during the 2026 calendar year. Register through EMU so the visit is logged against your record rather than remembered informally.
  • Honors College application materials
Presidential Scholars are members of The Honors College, and the Honors College application asks for a personal essay covering your academic accomplishments and career goals, plus academic or professional references who upload letters directly. Teachers and supervisors are welcomed; family and friends are discouraged.
  • Availability for the February 2027 interview
Applicants who advance are interviewed in a second round held on 6 February 2027. Keep the date clear once you have applied, since the interview is the stage where the cohort is actually chosen.
Step by step

How to apply

A 3.85 cumulative high school GPA qualifies you with no test score. A 3.5 to 3.84 GPA needs a 25 composite ACT or a 1200 SAT on Critical Reading plus Math. Work this out first, because the lower route means booking a test sitting with enough lead time for scores to reach EMU before 15 December 2026.
Complete the EMU undergraduate admission application at emich.edu/apply. Do this early. The Presidential Scholarship application is gated behind it, so an admission application filed in December leaves you no room.
Register for a campus tour, an open house, or one of the virtual honors sessions. The virtual sessions double as preparation, since EMU uses them to explain what a strong Presidential application looks like and puts current Presidential Scholars and Honors College staff in front of you.
Request official transcripts from your high school and have ACT or SAT scores sent if you are on the 3.5 to 3.84 route. Everything must be received by 15 December 2026, so build in the two to three weeks that testing agencies and school registrars usually take.
Complete the scholarship form on the EMU enrolment portal with every required item attached before 15 December 2026. Eastern Michigan states no exceptions will be made, which in practice means a file that is one document short on 16 December is simply out.
EMU notifies applicants moving forward to the interview round by 15 January 2027. Nothing further is required from you between the deadline and that notification.
Second round interviews are held on 6 February 2027. Go in able to talk about the academic and community work already in your file, and about why the Honors College suits how you want to study, since Presidential Scholars are expected to be active in it.

Questions

FAQ

What is the Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship?

It is the most prestigious award Eastern Michigan University offers an incoming first-year student, covering full tuition plus room and board for four years at a value EMU puts at approximately $100,000. Recipients become active members of The Honors College at EMU. Unlike the Emerald Scholarship, which is automatic for admitted students who meet the GPA bands, the Presidential Scholarship has its own application, its own December deadline and an interview round.

How much is the Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship worth?

EMU states the package is worth approximately $100,000 over four years and describes it as full tuition and room and board. Eastern Michigan does not publish a fixed annual dollar figure for the award, because the value tracks its own tuition and housing rates rather than a set amount. For scale, EMU lists tuition and the registration fee for a 24 to 32 credit year at $16,240 and room and board at $16,580 on its international cost of attendance page.

What GPA do you need for the Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship?

There are two routes. A cumulative high school GPA of 3.85 or higher qualifies you with no SAT or ACT requirement. A cumulative GPA between 3.5 and 3.84 qualifies you only with a 25 composite ACT or a 1200 SAT counted on Critical Reading plus Math. There is no route below a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Once you are on campus, renewal runs on a different number: a 3.3 cumulative EMU GPA with 15 credit hours each fall and winter semester.

When is the Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship deadline for 2027?

The deadline is 15 December 2026 for the class entering Fall 2027, and it covers everything at once: the EMU admission application, all official transcripts, any required test scores, and the Presidential Scholarship Application itself. EMU states that no exceptions will be made. Interview invitations follow by 15 January 2027 and interviews are held on 6 February 2027.

Do you have to visit campus to apply for the Presidential Scholarship?

Yes. A visit to Eastern Michigan University at least once during the 2026 calendar year is a stated requirement of the application, not a suggestion. An official campus tour or an open house satisfies it, and so does attending one of the virtual honors sessions EMU runs in the autumn. The virtual option is what makes the requirement workable for applicants who cannot travel to Ypsilanti.

Can international students apply for the Eastern Michigan Presidential Scholarship?

Eastern Michigan does not publish a citizenship or residency restriction on the Presidential Scholarship page, which is notable because it does publish one elsewhere: the Emerald Scholarship page requires US residency and the Eagle Guarantee is explicitly closed to international students, while the 4WARD Graduation Scholarship is explicitly open to them. Since EMU is specific where a restriction exists and silent here, the sensible reading is that the Presidential is not closed to international applicants, but the university has not said so in writing. Email undergraduate admissions and get it confirmed before you build an application around it. International undergraduates at EMU do pay in-state tuition under the Global Rate regardless.

How do you keep the Presidential Scholarship at Eastern Michigan?

The award renews for three additional consecutive years if you enrol in 15 credit hours each fall and winter semester, hold a cumulative EMU GPA of 3.3 or higher, stay in good standing on Satisfactory Academic Progress, and live in an on-campus community for all four years. Renewal is assessed at the end of each winter semester. Recipients sign a scholarship agreement, and the award applies to fall and winter semesters of a first bachelor's degree only.

Can you combine the Presidential Scholarship with the Emerald Scholarship?

No. EMU states that students cannot receive more than one of its first-year scholarships, so the Presidential Scholarship replaces rather than stacks with the Emerald Scholarship, the Eagle Guarantee and the 4WARD Graduation Scholarship. That rarely costs you anything, since the Emerald tops out well below full tuition and room and board. Federal and state aid such as the Pell Grant and the Michigan Achievement Scholarship sit outside that one-scholarship rule, so file the FAFSA anyway.

Fully Funded
Miami University Presidential Fellows Scholarship 2027
The Presidential Fellows Scholarship is Miami University's top merit award, and it is a genuine full ride: tuition, mandatory fees, housing and food for four years, plus a one-time academic enrichment fund of up to $5,000. Miami publishes the cohort size as fifteen students a year, all of them inside the Honors College, though the most recent incoming class came in at 22. There is no separate scholarship form. You indicate your interest on the Miami admission application, and your complete file has to be in by the firm 1 December 2026 deadline for Fall 2027 entry. One thing changed this cycle: self-reported ACT or SAT scores are now required for Presidential Fellows consideration, even though Miami stays test optional for everyone else. International applicants are eligible, and the Class of 2030 cohort includes a student from Mongolia.
Partial Funding
Boston University Presidential Scholarship 2027
The Boston University Presidential Scholarship is BU's headline merit award for incoming first-year students, given by the Board of Admissions to applicants with exceptional academic records who also lead in their schools and communities. It pays half tuition and renews for up to four years of undergraduate study. There is no scholarship form, no extra essay and no interview round: the one thing you have to do is get your complete admission application in by 1 December 2026 for Fall 2027 entry, a full month before BU's regular application date of 5 January. US citizens, permanent residents and international students are all eligible, which matters because BU's need-based aid is closed to international students.
Partial Funding
University of Michigan-Dearborn Scholarship 2027
The University of Michigan-Dearborn Scholarship is awarded from your admission file, with no separate scholarship form anywhere in the process. Non-resident and international first-year students are placed on a GPA ladder worth $5,000 to $12,500 a year, or $20,000 to $50,000 across four years. Students from eight nearby states and Ontario can instead be assessed at the in-state rate through the Great Lakes Scholarship, worth around $18,000 a year. Non-resident graduate students on in-person programmes receive the Graduate Dearborn Scholarship, which pays $1,250 to $8,000 a semester depending on credit load. Every merit award renews on a cumulative 3.0 GPA and full-time enrolment for up to eight semesters. The next date that matters is 15 November 2026, the Winter 2027 deadline for applicants who need a visa.
