What is the Iowa State University Scholarship?
Search for an Iowa State University Scholarship and you land on a page that is really two offers wearing one name. The International Merit Scholarship is the competitive one, reviewed by a committee and paid to a limited number of high-achieving international students. Sitting beside it is the International Student Excellence Award, which Iowa State hands out automatically on admission against a published GPA and test-score table. Both are only for students the university assesses at international tuition rates, both apply strictly to undergraduate tuition and fees, and Iowa State is blunt that you cannot hold one with the other. Working out which side you belong on before you start is the single most useful hour you will spend on this.

The Excellence ladder is where the larger numbers live, and it needs no application at all. The President's Award pays $14,000 a year and $56,000 in total, the Dean's Award $12,000 and $48,000, both requiring an SAT or ACT score. Below those, the Innovator's Award pays $10,000 a year on a minimum 3.70 GPA with no test needed, and the Launchpad Award pays $6,000 a year for a GPA between 3.50 and 3.69. Transfer students see $8,000 a year as a Gold Scholar or $4,000 as a Cardinal Scholar. So if you are holding a 3.7 with a decent test score, the automatic award is probably already yours and the Merit application is the wrong target. If your grades sit just under those lines, or your school does not report a GPA that maps cleanly onto a 4.0 scale, the Merit Scholarship is the route where a committee actually reads your file.
Whichever one you are aiming at, the calendar decides more than people expect. OneApp opened on 15 September 2026 for the 2027-2028 scholarship year, and the Merit Scholarship only counts you once you have filed the General Application and then selected the International Student Admissions Scholarship Application under Opportunities and Recommended. First-year applicants entering in Fall 2027 have until 15 February 2027 for priority consideration, with 1 May 2027 as the last date; transfers get 1 March 2027 and 30 June 2027. Spring 2027 entry is tighter, closing 15 November 2026 and 15 December 2026. Accepting your admission offer by 1 May for fall or 15 December for spring is part of the eligibility list on both tracks, not an afterthought. Be realistic about scale too. Iowa State asks international applicants to document $52,000 for a year of expenses, or $54,300 for Design majors and Animal Enterprise and Innovation, and every international student pays for the Student and Scholar Medical Insurance Plan on top.
