The NIU Political Science Scholarship 2027 is best understood as a department budget rather than a single award. Northern Illinois University runs its political science funding through two separate machines, and knowing which one you are dealing with saves you a wasted semester. Undergraduates file one general application in MyScholarships and get matched to whatever departmental scholarships fit their profile. Graduate students are funded through assistantships decided alongside admission, plus a set of six named awards that all close on the same March day. Neither machine talks to the other.

Start with the undergraduate side, because the calendar there is fixed and public. The 2027-2028 MyScholarships cycle opens 15 November 2026 and carries a priority deadline of 31 January 2027. What the department stresses is completeness: answer every question, financial need included, because the matching engine only puts you in front of awards you appear eligible for. Practical advice, in the order it will matter to you. Ask for faculty letters in early February, not late February, since the Dubin and Frisch awards both need one and 1 March arrives fast. Pick your subfield in the application and name faculty in it, because with 12 faculty covering American government and public law, comparative politics, international relations and political theory, fit is visible to the committee in a way it is not at a large department.
