World Bank Treasury Internship 2027 - Paid Summer in DC
The World Bank Treasury Internship 2027 puts up to 17 college students inside the unit that manages about $300 billion in assets and runs the triple-A bond programmes of IBRD, IDA and IFC. You work full-time in Washington, DC from 1 June to 9 August 2027, starting with an onboarding week and then rotating through three Treasury teams for three weeks each, with a presentation at the end of every rotation and a capstone to the management team on 9 August. Pay is $22.70 an hour net for non-US citizens and $27.70 an hour gross for US citizens, for 400 hours. The programme is built for rising seniors: you must be in the second-to-last year of a four-year degree and graduating between December 2027 and September 2028. Nationality does not matter, and the World Bank sponsors a G4 visa for interns who need one. Applications for the 2027 summer close on 30 September 2026 at 11:59 pm UTC, and every applicant hears back by December.
What is the World Bank Treasury Internship?
The World Bank Treasury Internship is a paid summer programme for college juniors who want a career in financial markets, run by the part of the World Bank Group that raises its money and manages its reserves. Treasury looks after about $300 billion in assets and issues the triple-A bonds that fund IBRD, IDA and IFC lending, so the work sits closer to a bank trading floor than to a development policy office. Treasury calls it the only World Bank programme dedicated to college students, and the 2027 cohort is capped at 17, one intern per team.
The summer runs from 1 June to 9 August 2027 in Washington, DC. You spend the first week in onboarding, then move through three teams for three weeks each, presenting to each team as you leave. Every rotation comes with its own mentor and coordinator, and the ten weeks end with a capstone presentation to Treasury's management team on 9 August. Along the way there are weekly sessions with the programme director, talks with officers and directors, and a chance to meet the Vice President and Treasurer. Pay is $27.70 an hour gross if you are a US citizen and $22.70 an hour net if you are not, for 400 hours, and you get a World Bank laptop. Housing and travel to DC are not mentioned, so plan to cover them yourself.
The graduation window is where most applicants get screened out. For the 2027 summer you must be in the second-to-last year of a four-year degree and finish between December 2027 and September 2028. Master's students cannot apply at all. Your major does not have to be finance, but Treasury recommends business or economics and notices real finance experience, a finance club role, or data skills in Python or Bloomberg. International students are welcome: the World Bank sponsors a G4 visa if you need one, and F-1 students can use CPT.
Applications for the 2027 summer close on 30 September 2026 at 11:59 pm UTC, and every applicant hears back by December. You need only a one-page cover letter and a one-page resume, both as PDFs, plus an optional half-page statement, which means each line gets read closely. Use the templates Treasury provides and apply through the careers portal link at the bottom of the official Treasury student careers page, not the Indeed.com route an older FAQ answer still mentions. The payoff is the Junior Analyst track: strong interns can be offered a two-year analyst role on one Treasury team after graduating. If you are a sophomore, the GWI Scholars Program guide covers the Girls Who Invest route, which places a few sophomores on Treasury's investment management teams each summer. FAQ
How much does the World Bank Treasury internship pay?
The 2027 programme pays $22.70 an hour net for non-US citizens and $27.70 an hour gross for US citizens, for 400 hours. That works out to roughly $9,080 net or $11,080 gross over the ten weeks. The FAQ further down the official page still quotes an older band of $21.30 to $26.00 an hour, but the internship description for 2027 uses the higher figures.
When is the World Bank Treasury internship deadline for 2027?
The careers portal posting for the 2027 summer closes on 30 September 2026 at 11:59 pm UTC. That is 7:59 pm in Washington, DC, so do not leave it to the evening. The application link goes live each September, so if you miss this date the next realistic chance is the September 2027 window for the 2028 summer, provided your graduation date fits.
Can international students apply for the World Bank Treasury internship?
Yes. Treasury's own answer to whether non-US citizens can apply is "emphatically yes." The World Bank sponsors a G4 visa for incoming interns who need one, and students on F-1 status can use CPT for the internship instead. The one difference is pay: non-US citizens receive $22.70 an hour net, while US citizens receive $27.70 an hour gross.
Can master's students apply to the World Bank Treasury summer internship?
No. Only the equivalent of rising college seniors are eligible, meaning students in the second-to-last year of a four-year degree. If you are in a master's programme or already hold a master's degree, the Treasury internship is closed to you. Treasury describes it as the only World Bank programme dedicated to college students.
Is the World Bank Treasury internship remote?
No. Interns must be in Washington, DC, full-time for the whole programme from 1 June to 9 August 2027, and are expected in the office at least four days a week. You also cannot hold any other job or internship at the same time.
Does the World Bank Treasury internship lead to a full-time job?
It can. Treasury may offer interns a Junior Analyst position after a successful summer. Applications for those roles open at the end of the internship and are competitive. Junior Analysts get a one-year term that can be renewed once, for two years in total, and former analysts have moved on to banks, ratings firms and graduate programmes at places like Columbia and Sciences Po.
How competitive is the World Bank Treasury internship?
Very. Treasury plans to hire up to 17 interns, one for each of its 17 teams, and does not publish applicant numbers. Screening moves from committee review to a remote test and then an interview for a select few. Successful applicants usually bring finance work experience or club leadership, strong communication skills, and data skills such as Python or experience with Bloomberg, World Bank or IMF databases.
Can Girls Who Invest scholars intern at the World Bank Treasury?
Yes, through a separate route. Under a partnership announced in 2024, several Girls Who Invest interns in their sophomore year join each summer alongside the main cohort, rotating on investment management teams only. GWI runs that selection, and only graduates of the GWI Online Intensive Program qualify. GWI alumni can also apply directly to the main internship if they meet every requirement, including the graduation window.
