GWI Scholars Program 2027 - Free Training, Paid Internship
The GWI Scholars Program 2027 is open now, and Girls Who Invest charges nothing at any point: no application fee, no tuition. Every admitted Scholar joins a unified curriculum running December 2026 to late March 2027, covering Excel, accounting, financial statement analysis, financial modelling and career development, delivered as roughly 20 or more hours of asynchronous training plus at least one live evening session a month. In April 2027 the cohort splits. Sophomores who opted into the Internship Track and were matched with a partner firm mostly continue into the Summer Intensive Program, four weeks in residence at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania from late May to late June, followed immediately by a seven-week paid frontline investing internship running to mid-August. Everyone else moves into the Online Intensive Program, a self-directed track built with partners that have historically included the CFA Institute, Wall Street Prep and Wharton Online. Two things surprise people about the name. Despite it, the programme accepts all gender identities including male-identifying students, and it takes every major with no finance experience and no minimum GPA. Eligibility runs on your expected graduation date, which must fall between fall 2028 and spring 2030. Priority applications close 15 September 2026, with a final cutoff of 15 October 2026.
What is the GWI Scholars Program 2027?
The GWI Scholars Program 2027 is Girls Who Invest's tuition-free route into investment management for undergraduates who are two or three years away from graduating, and the 2027 cycle is open right now. Nothing costs money at any stage: no application fee, no tuition, no hidden platform charge. What GWI wants in return is a real application, since there is no GPA screen to hide behind and the committee reads holistically for curiosity, analytical instinct, communication and how you handle feedback.
Start with the two facts most people get wrong about it. The first is the name. Despite it, the Scholars Program takes applicants of all gender identities, including male-identifying students, and the organisation says so in plain terms on its own FAQ. The second is who gets the internship. The famous part of GWI, four weeks at Wharton followed by a paid frontline investing internship, is not what admission buys you. Only sophomores can opt into the Internship Track, only a portion of that track is matched with a partner firm, and every first-year Scholar goes into the Online Intensive Program instead. GWI partner firms have hosted 175 to 200 interns a summer in recent years, so the internships are real and plentiful, just not automatic.
Structurally the year runs in two halves. From December 2026 to late March 2027 every Scholar takes the same unified curriculum: Excel, accounting, financial statement analysis, financial modelling and career development, delivered as around 20 hours of asynchronous work plus monthly live sessions scheduled for evenings on Eastern Time so they miss your classes. In April 2027 the cohort splits. Matched Internship Track Scholars mostly move into the Summer Intensive Program, in residence at the Wharton School from late May to late June, then straight into a seven-week paid internship that runs to mid-August. Everyone else moves into the Online Intensive Program, self-directed and built with partners that have historically included the CFA Institute, Wall Street Prep and Wharton Online. You cannot pick your track; placement is decided in spring on internship availability, your preferences and how you have done in the programme.
Three practical points before you file. Eligibility is set by your anticipated graduation date, between fall 2028 and spring 2030, not by credits earned, which catches out students carrying heavy AP or dual-credit loads. Citizenship does not gate the education, but most internships arranged through GWI need unrestricted US work authorisation and will not take students on CPT or anyone needing future sponsorship, so international students should plan for the curriculum and treat an internship as a bonus. And the priority deadline of 15 September 2026 is worth hitting, since it moves your decision to 15 October rather than early December, which matters if you are lining up other summer plans. Rejected as a first-year? Reapply as a sophomore, GWI judges each application on its own merits. For other US options, the Oregon State University Scholarships 2027 guide covers automatic university merit money and the Brown University Scholarships 2027 guide covers need-based aid that meets 100 per cent of need. Current dates and requirements sit on the Girls Who Invest apply and FAQ page.
Eligibility
-
✓First-year or sophomore standing, graduating fall 2028 to spring 2030GWI sets eligibility by anticipated college graduation date, not by credits accumulated, so an expected graduation between fall 2028 and spring 2030 is the real test. Juniors, seniors, graduate students and high school students cannot apply. If you are turned down as a first-year you are welcome to reapply as a sophomore, and the earlier application does not count against you.
-
✓Enrolled at a four-year US or US-style institution from fall 2026You must be attending, or transferring to, an accredited four-year US or US-style college or university in the fall of 2026. The programme is built around the US investment management industry and its recruiting calendar, so a degree outside that system does not qualify even if the coursework matches.
-
✓Any major, no finance background, no GPA minimumGWI states plainly that anyone with the right skills can be a great investor regardless of major or previous exposure to finance. More than 100 distinct majors are represented among its 4,000-plus alumni. Review is holistic and committee-based, weighing intellectual curiosity, research and analytical skills, communication, teamwork, and how you take feedback. No minimum GPA is published or applied.
-
✓Open to all gender identitiesThe name is historical. GWI describes the Scholars Program as an inclusive training programme for undergraduate first-years and sophomores of all gender identities, including male-identifying students, who show a commitment to its mission. If the name has been putting you off applying, that is the sentence to read twice.
-
✓Citizenship: open for the education, restricted for the internshipGWI does not limit applications by citizenship status, and the Scholars Program itself is largely a remote educational experience with no work authorisation requirement. The Internship Track is different: most internship matches arranged through GWI require unrestricted authorisation to work in the US, and will not be filled by students on CPT or by anyone who would need future sponsorship such as STEM OPT, H-1B, TN or E-3.
-
✓Internship Track is sophomores only, and opting in guarantees nothingOnly sophomore applicants can opt into consideration for the Internship Track at the point of application. All first-year Scholars transition directly into the Online Intensive Program. Being placed on the Internship Track puts you in the candidate pool for internship matching through GWI, with extra interview preparation and resume work attached, but internship availability depends on partner firm capacity and only a portion of the track is matched.
-
✓Two-year college students: transfer paperwork at applicationSophomores at two-year US colleges who are transferring to a four-year institution for their junior year can apply, but must submit a letter of transfer or conditional admission, confirmation of enrolment in a direct transfer programme, or a detailed transfer plan naming schools and timelines. Admission is contingent on that transfer landing for the fall 2027 term, confirmed to GWI by 1 June 2027 at the latest.

Document checklist
-
✓Online application with short answer questionsThe core form on the GWI website, including every required fill-in field and short answer prompt. It is also where sophomores opt into consideration for the Internship Track, so read that section before you submit rather than after.
-
✓Written essay of 350 to 500 wordsOne essay against a prompt supplied inside the application. Stay inside the word band and answer the prompt as asked. With no GPA screen and a holistic committee review, the essay carries far more weight here than it would in a numbers-driven process.
-
✓Up-to-date resumeA current resume detailing work experience and extracurricular involvement. Campus jobs, family businesses, club treasurer roles and part-time retail all count. GWI is reading for curiosity, analytical habits and teamwork rather than for finance internships you have not had yet.
-
✓One-minute pre-recorded videoRecorded to instructions inside the application. Keep it natural and conversational rather than scripted word for word. One minute is short, so decide the single thing you want the committee to remember and lead with it.
-
✓Academic transcriptSophomores submit a complete college transcript, first-year applicants a complete high school transcript covering grades 9 to 12 or equivalent coursework. Unofficial transcripts are accepted in the review. Transcripts count as supplementary and may be submitted after the deadline, so a slow registrar should not stop you filing on time.
-
✓Two reference feedback forms (Internship Track only)Required only from sophomores opting into the Internship Track. You nominate the referees and GWI sends them a feedback form. Ask them in August rather than in the week of the deadline, and give them your resume and the prompt so the two forms say different things.
-
✓Transfer documentation (two-year college applicants)A letter of transfer or conditional admission, proof of enrolment in a direct transfer programme, or a written transfer plan naming target schools and application timelines. Whichever you send, keep a copy, since confirmation of your four-year enrolment is due to GWI by 1 June 2027.
-
✓Nothing else, and nothing to payNo application fee, no test scores, no financial aid forms, no FAFSA. GWI states you can apply free of charge, and the education itself is tuition-free, so any site asking you to pay for GWI access is not GWI. Questions go to [email protected].

FAQ
What is the GWI Scholars Program?
The GWI Scholars Program is a tuition-free training programme from Girls Who Invest for first-year and sophomore undergraduates in the US who are exploring careers in investment management. Every admitted Scholar takes the same unified curriculum from December 2026 to late March 2027, covering Excel, accounting, financial statement analysis, financial modelling and career development. From April the cohort splits into the Summer Intensive Program, which pairs four weeks in residence at Wharton with a seven-week paid investing internship, or the Online Intensive Program, a self-directed track built with partners including the CFA Institute, Wall Street Prep and Wharton Online.
What is the GWI Scholars Program 2027 deadline?
Two dates. The priority deadline is 15 September 2026 and the final deadline is 15 October 2026. Applying by the priority date gets you a decision by 15 October; applying by the final date means hearing back by early December 2026. Supplementary documents such as transcripts and reference feedback forms may be submitted after the deadline, so file the main application on time even if a transcript is still in transit. There is no application fee.
Can men apply to Girls Who Invest?
Yes. GWI describes the Scholars Program as an inclusive training programme for undergraduate first-years and sophomores of all gender identities, including male-identifying students, who have shown a commitment to its mission. The name reflects the organisation's founding purpose of getting more women into portfolio management rather than a current restriction on who may apply. Every other eligibility rule, on class year, graduation date and institution, applies the same way to everyone.
Do you need to be a finance major or have a high GPA for GWI?
Neither. GWI takes students from all majors and states that no prior finance or investment management experience is necessary, with more than 100 distinct majors represented among its 4,000-plus alumni. No minimum GPA is published or applied. Review is holistic and committee-based, looking for intellectual curiosity, research and analytical skills, strong written and spoken communication, the ability to work in teams, and the habit of taking feedback and acting on it.
Is a paid internship guaranteed in the GWI Scholars Program?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about the programme. Only sophomores can opt into the Internship Track, and being placed on it puts you in the candidate pool rather than in a job. Internship availability depends on partner firm capacity in a given year, and only a portion of Internship Track Scholars are matched. Those who are not matched continue into the Online Intensive Program and are free to keep recruiting for external roles. Over recent years GWI partner firms have hosted between 175 and 200 GWI interns each summer.
Can international students apply to the GWI Scholars Program?
For the education, yes. GWI does not limit or exclude applications by citizenship status, and the Scholars Program is largely a remote educational experience with no work authorisation requirement attached. The Internship Track is the catch: most internship matches arranged through GWI require unrestricted authorisation to work in the US and will not be filled by students on Curricular Practical Training or by anyone who would need future sponsorship such as STEM OPT, H-1B, TN or E-3. International students at US institutions can therefore take the full curriculum but should be realistic about the internship route.
What is the difference between the Summer Intensive Program and the Online Intensive Program?
The Summer Intensive Program is the in-person track: four weeks of academic training in residence at the Wharton School from late May to late June 2027, taught by university faculty, followed immediately by a seven-week paid frontline investing internship at a partner firm running to mid-August. The Online Intensive Program is self-directed and asynchronous, drawing on educational partners that have historically included the CFA Institute, Wall Street Prep and Wharton Online. You cannot apply to either one directly. Everyone applies to the Scholars Program, and placement is decided in the spring on internship availability, preferences and in-programme performance. Most Scholars end up in OIP, and all first-year Scholars go there.
How long is the GWI Scholars Program and how much time does it take?
The unified curriculum runs from December 2026 to late March 2027 and asks for roughly 20 or more hours of asynchronous academic and professional training across those months, plus one or more live virtual sessions each month. Live sessions are usually scheduled for evenings Eastern Time to work around classes, and some are recorded for catch-up. After April the commitment depends on your track. Summer Intensive Program Scholars must commit to the full programme without interruption, which means the Wharton residency from late May and the internship straight afterwards, so a competing summer job or study abroad plan will not fit alongside it.
