World Bank Young Professionals Program 2027 - Eligibility
The World Bank Young Professionals Program 2027 is the World Bank Group's flagship leadership track for people with a graduate degree and two to six years of work experience who want a career in global development. You join as a salaried GF-level staff member on a two-year term, start at headquarters in Washington, DC in September 2027, and complete three rotations of eight months each across the World Bank, IFC and MIGA, with at least one of them in a country office. Strong performers are then placed in a role for a further five years. There is no age limit, because eligibility turns on your experience, counted from your first full-time job after your undergraduate degree. The portal opened on 1 September 2026 and closes on 30 September 2026 at 11:59 PM UTC, with interviews in December and January and offers going out in late January or early February 2027.
What is the World Bank Young Professionals Program?
The World Bank Young Professionals Program is the World Bank Group's own route into a staff career for early-career specialists, and the institution calls it its flagship leadership development initiative. It is neither a scholarship nor an internship. You are hired as a GF-level term staff member, paid on the same salary scales as other staff, and put through two years of rotations, training and mentoring. Do well and the Group places you in a regular role for another five years, with the chance to renew after that.
Your two years are split into three rotations of eight months. One sits in your own field, one crosses into a different part of the Group, such as moving between the World Bank, IFC and MIGA, and at least one takes you to a country office outside Washington. The whole cohort starts in DC in September 2027. Where you go after that is decided by business needs, not by you. When you apply you pick a track, Operations or Specialized Functions, then one primary stream and up to two backups. This cycle's streams run from education, health and social protection through economic policy, climate, water, energy and transport to digital transformation, investment and legal work.
The experience window is where most applicants fall out. You need at least two and no more than six years of full-time professional experience as of 1 September 2026, counted from your first full-time job after your undergraduate degree. Full-time doctoral research in a relevant field counts toward that total, so PhD candidates fit well as long as all written work is in before the September start. The World Bank Group states plainly that there is no age requirement. Current staff and anyone with an active contractor agreement are shut out this cycle, though former staff can apply.
The application looks light and still takes real thought. You upload a CV of one or two pages, your passport photo page and proof of your postgraduate degrees, then answer two prompts of up to 400 words each. Only the top 10% of applicants reach the longlist in early October, and the final stage is a 45 to 50 minute panel interview plus an hour-long assessment centre built around a group case exercise. Apply through the portal link on the official World Bank Group YPP page before 30 September 2026 at 11:59 PM UTC, and create a WBG Careers account so status updates reach you. If you are still a college junior, the World Bank Treasury Internship guide covers the Group's paid summer route for students, and economists from Africa can look at the AERC World Bank Visiting Scholars guide for a research stay in Washington.

FAQ
Is there an age limit for the World Bank Young Professionals Program?
No. The official FAQ says there is no age requirement and that eligibility is based on professional experience instead. What matters is having at least two and no more than six years of full-time professional experience as of 1 September 2026, counted from your first full-time job after your undergraduate degree.
How much do World Bank Young Professionals get paid?
Young Professionals are hired on a GF-level term appointment and paid on the World Bank Group's staff salary scales, which are reviewed every year against public and private sector pay in each country. The YPP page does not publish a figure, and pay cannot be negotiated. Your offer letter sets out the salary, benefits and duty station. On top of pay you get staff benefits such as medical and dental cover, a retirement savings plan and 26 days of annual leave.
When is the World Bank YPP 2027 application deadline?
Applications for the cohort starting in September 2027 close on 30 September 2026 at 11:59 PM UTC, which is 7:59 PM in Washington, DC. The portal opened on 1 September 2026. Late applications, emailed applications and edits after the deadline are not accepted, so submit a day or two early.
Do I need a PhD for the World Bank Young Professionals Program?
No. The minimum is a graduate-level degree, so a relevant master's degree is enough. PhD candidates are welcome, and full-time doctoral research in a relevant field can count toward the two to six years of experience, provided the degree is substantially complete with all written work submitted before the September 2027 start.
How competitive is the World Bank Young Professionals Program?
Extremely. Only the top 10% of the full applicant list make it past the first review in October, and a smaller group then goes through assessments, a panel interview and an assessment centre. The World Bank Group does not publish how many places each cohort has. Applications that stand out show real depth in one stream, with concrete results rather than general enthusiasm for development.
Can international applicants apply for the World Bank YPP?
Yes. You need to be a national of a World Bank Group member country, and the programme recruits globally. Non-US citizens based at headquarters work on a G-4 visa sponsored by the World Bank Group, and legally married spouses and dependents can apply for G-4 dependent visas. Domestic partners do not qualify for G-4 dependent status under US State Department rules.
Can I apply to more than one stream in the YPP?
You submit one application only, and sending more than one leads to disqualification. Within that application you choose one primary stream and can list up to two additional streams for consideration, but only if your background genuinely fits them.
What happens after the two-year World Bank Young Professionals Program?
If you complete the programme successfully, the World Bank Group places you in a role for an additional five years based on your performance, with the possibility of renewing the contract after that. Placement is not automatic, so how you perform across the three rotations matters.
