Research Fellowships
Research fellowships fund you to work at a specific institution for a set period. They are different from degree scholarships - you are not enrolled as a student. You conduct independent research, usually at the postdoctoral level. Below are our fellowship guides.
ARCE Research Associates 2027 - Egypt Field Support
ARCE Research Associates is unfunded research status for scholars who already hold private or institutional funding and need American Research Center in Egypt help with Egyptian government clearances, permissions, and Cairo mentoring. US citizens and foreign nationals at US universities may apply using the same portal as funded ARCE fellowships. Associates receive administrative parity with ARCE fellows but no stipend from ARCE, and non-member institutions may pay a modest service fee.
AMS Graduate Fellowship 2027 - Up to $26,000
AMS Graduate Fellowships support first-year graduate students in atmospheric and related sciences at accredited US universities. The American Meteorological Society awards stipends from $5,000 to $26,000 for a nine-month academic year, plus partial travel support to the AMS Annual Meeting. Apply by January 23, 2027 for students entering graduate school in fall 2027.
AIBS Junior Fellowship 2027 - $1,150 per Month
AIBS Junior Fellowships fund US doctoral candidates for two to twelve months of dissertation research on Bangladesh. The American Institute of Bangladesh Studies pays about $1,150 per month, economy round-trip airfare, and travel insurance. Applicants must be US citizens, AIBS individual members, and all-but-dissertation before the award starts.
AAAS Mass Media Fellowship 2027 - $10,000 Stipend
The AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellowship places science, engineering, and mathematics students and postdocs at US newsrooms for ten weeks each summer. Fellows receive a $10,000 stipend plus travel to orientation in Washington and to their media host site. Applications for Summer 2027 open 1 October 2026 and close 1 January 2027.
Commonwealth Mongan Fellowship 2027 - $80,000
The Commonwealth Fund Mongan Fellowship in Minority Health Policy at Harvard University, now branded as the Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Health Policy Leadership, is a one-year, full-time programme for US physicians who finished residency and want to lead health equity work. Up to five fellows per year receive an $80,000 stipend, full tuition for an MPH at Harvard Chan or an MPA at Harvard Kennedy School (if you already hold an MPH), health insurance, books, travel, and practicum support. You must be a US citizen or permanent resident, board eligible or certified, and committed to policy, public service, or academia. Expect simultaneous Harvard graduate school and fellowship applications around early December for a July start.
Guggenheim Fellowships 2027 - US & Canada Grant
Guggenheim Fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fund six to twelve months of work for mid-career artists, writers, scholars and scientists who are U.S. or Canadian citizens or permanent residents. The 2027 United States and Canada competition closed on 15 September 2026; work samples and reference letters follow in late September and October, with new Fellows announced in late April 2027.
Charles A. Lindbergh Fellowship 2027 - $100K NASM
The Charles A. Lindbergh Chair in Aerospace History at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is a competitive twelve-month, in-residence fellowship for senior scholars and distinguished nonacademic authors working on a book or major publication in aerospace history. NASM lists a $100,000 stipend plus up to $5,000 for travel and research expenses. You apply through SOLAA with a 1,500-word proposal, CV, bibliography, budget, three references, and a named museum staff advisor you contact before submitting. Selected fellows typically start about a year after the winter application cycle. The next posted application deadline is January 16, 2027, with residency in the Washington, D.C. area.
A. Verville Fellowship 2027 - NASM $55,000
The A. Verville Fellowship at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum funds nine to twelve months of in-residence research on major trends in aviation or space history. Mid-career scholars and qualified nonacademic writers apply through SOLAA with a NASM staff advisor, a research proposal, CV, and recommendations. Predoctoral graduate students are generally not eligible. The Smithsonian lists a $55,000 stipend for a twelve-month term plus limited travel funds, with tenure typically starting between mid-August and early October. Applications for the next cycle are due January 15, 2027, with notification around mid-March.
AFPE Pre-Doctoral Fellowship 2027 - $10,000 PhD
The AFPE Pre-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Pharmaceutical Sciences awards $10,000 to high-performing Ph.D. students at accredited US schools of pharmacy. You must be a US citizen or permanent resident, enrolled full time, with at least three semesters of graduate credit toward the Ph.D. and completion expected within three additional years. Selection weighs research plan (50%), academics (35%), and leadership (15%). The 2027-2028 cycle is expected to open in mid-November 2026 with Part 1 due mid-December 2026 and Part 2 due January 30, 2027 on SmarterSelect.
Churchill Scholarship 2027 - Cambridge STEM Award
The Churchill Scholarship sends up to 18 US citizens each year to Churchill College, Cambridge for one year of master's study in science, mathematics, engineering, or science policy. The Winston Churchill Foundation covers tuition, UK visa and health surcharge costs, round-trip airfare, a stipend above the UK Research Council rate, and eligibility for a $4,000 research grant, with total value over $80,000. You apply through a participating US undergraduate institution; the foundation nomination deadline is November 2, 2026 at 5 p.m. Eastern.
NERRS Graduate Research Fellowship 2027 - NOAA
The Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship, often searched as the NERRS Graduate Research Fellowship, places master's and doctoral students at one of 30 National Estuarine Research Reserves for two years of collaborative coastal research. NOAA funds up to $45,000 per year in direct costs for stipend, tuition, travel, and supplies. US citizens and permanent residents apply through their university on Grants.gov; applications are due in late 2026 for an August 2027 fellowship start.
Rome Prize 2027 - Up to $30,000 Rome Fellowship
The Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome supports about thirty US artists and scholars each year with a residency in Italy. Full-term winners receive a $30,000 stipend, a private bedroom and bath, a studio, weekday meals through the Rome Sustainable Food Project, and nine months in Rome from September through June. Half-term awards pay $16,000. Most categories require US citizenship at application; several humanities postdoctoral tracks also accept foreign nationals who have lived in the United States for three years before the deadline. Applications for the 2027-2028 residency close November 1, 2026, with a higher-fee window through November 15 and recommendation letters due November 30.
