Fulbright US Student Program 2027 - 160+ Countries

The national deadline for the 2027-2028 competition is 6 October 2026 at 5pm Eastern Time. That date only applies directly to at-large applicants. If you are enrolled at a US college or university you apply through your institution, and campus deadlines typically fall four to six weeks earlier, putting them in late August or September 2026. Check with your Fulbright Program Adviser rather than working to October.

US citizens who either are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme, or hold a bachelor's degree by the time the grant starts. Applicants who already have a PhD are not eligible for the Student Program. People who are not enrolled, and applicants in the creative and performing arts, should have relatively limited professional experience in their field, typically seven years or less.

Round-trip travel to the host country, a living stipend broadly based on the cost of living there which goes toward room, board and incidental costs, and accident and sickness health benefits through the ASPE scheme, plus a 24/7 support line. Two caveats worth reading. ASPE is a basic policy and the programme states plainly that it is not a substitute for private health coverage. And there is no single grant amount, because stipends are set country by country.

More than 2,000 annually, across upwards of 140 countries, with opportunities listed in over 160 countries and territories. That scale makes it one of the largest funded international exchange programmes anywhere, though selectivity varies enormously by country and award: a popular European Study/Research award and a less-applied-to English Teaching Assistant placement are very different competitions.

Four families. Study/Research Awards fund independent study or research and often need a letter of affiliation from a host institution. English Teaching Assistant awards place you in classrooms overseas. Alongside those sit the Fulbright-National Geographic Award Program and the Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health. You apply to one specific award in one country rather than to the programme in general.

If you are enrolled at a US college or university, yes, and you have no choice about it. You work with your campus Fulbright Program Adviser, meet an institutional deadline, sit a campus interview and get the chance to revise your application on that feedback before it goes forward. If you are not enrolled, you may still be able to apply through your most recent institution if its adviser takes alumni, and otherwise you submit directly to IIE.

Slowly, and in stages. IIE runs a technical review in October, National Screening Committee panels review through November and December, and recommended or non-recommended status arrives at the end of January. Recommended applications then go overseas for host country review between January and April, with final decisions released on a rolling basis between March and June. IIE says openly that it cannot predict when any particular decision will come.

No. The programme states that application submissions are final and applications cannot be unsubmitted for any reason. That makes the final read-through more important than usual, and it is another argument for the campus route, where the adviser interview gives you a structured chance to revise before anything is filed.

Career stage, mostly. The Student Program is for people at or near the start of their academic lives: enrolled students, recent graduates and early-career artists, and it excludes anyone holding a PhD. The Scholar Program funds academics and professionals who already hold doctorates or equivalent standing. Both also run in both directions, so a Fulbright Scholar Award can equally mean a UK academic coming to the United States.
