What is the Carnegie Endowment Internship?

The Carnegie Endowment Internship is a paid placement inside a think tank that has been arguing about American foreign policy since 1910, and one of the few in Washington that publishes its intern pay floor rather than leaving it to be discovered at offer stage. Carnegie describes itself as a community of more than 300 people across twenty countries. An internship drops you into one corner of that: a single research program or a single department, working alongside the scholars whose names sit on the publications.

Money is where Carnegie is unusually direct. Every intern, part time or full time, is paid at least $20 per hour. Full-time interns get a benefits package and part-time interns are eligible for limited benefits, which is a better deal than the unpaid or stipend-only arrangements that still circulate in the policy world. What Carnegie does not provide is housing, relocation money or academic credit, so the hourly rate is the entire financial picture and it has to stretch across Washington rent if the role is an on-site one.

The structure catches people out more than the money does. There is no Carnegie internship application form, no cohort intake and no annual deadline. Teams post roles on the Carnegie jobs board when they have work and a budget, and those roles come down when someone is hired. Two things follow. Checking the board weekly beats waiting for an announcement, and applying early in a posting matters more than polishing an application until the window has effectively closed. Each posting also states whether it accepts remote candidates or needs someone in the DC-metro area, which is the line that decides whether the rest of the description is worth reading. Carnegie internships run through its centers abroad too, in Europe, China, India and at the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, and those sit outside the US pay floor and follow their own terms.

If you are about to graduate, the other door is worth knowing about. The James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program places about 15 people a year as research assistants to Carnegie scholars for 10 to 12 months from 1 September, at around $4,000 a month before taxes with full benefits and up to $1,500 in relocation support. It is not something you apply to. Participating universities nominate their own candidates through a designated nominating official, nominations are due to Carnegie by 15 January, interviews run in February and early March, and everyone hears before 31 March. Around 6 percent of applicants are selected, so the nomination is a real hurdle rather than a formality, and your first step is your campus fellowships or career office rather than Carnegie itself. Carnegie requires work authorisation for any US-based internship and does not present visa sponsorship as part of the package. Carnegie notes that US-based international students typically have work authorisation, so check where you stand with your school before you spend time on an application.
The pay floor of $20 an hour, the benefits split between full-time and part-time interns, and the work authorisation rule are set centrally and stated on the internships page. Everything else is decided by the individual posting.
The board sits at carnegieendowment.applicantpro.com and carries staff and intern postings together. Intern roles are named by the team hiring them, for example Research Intern or Communications Intern followed by the program or center.
Carnegie states that postings denote this explicitly. It changes whether the internship is realistic for you more than any other line in the description, so read it before the responsibilities.
There is no universal document set. Expect a resume and cover letter as the base, with a writing sample and transcript on research-side roles, and language evidence where a team works in another language.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies runs paid internships in Washington, DC across its research programs, in the fall, spring and summer terms, for undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates. CHCI Congressional Internship Summer 2027 - Paid in DC
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute puts undergraduates and recent graduates into congressional offices on Capitol Hill for a summer, and pays properly for it. Summer 2027 interns get $4,776, furnished housing with rent and utilities covered, domestic round-trip flights to Washington, medical insurance with all premiums paid by CHCI, and a $100 a month Metro stipend. You work at least 32 hours a week in your congressional office assignment, attend an eight-day orientation and weekly leadership sessions, and complete community service hours. Applications launch on 15 August 2026 and close on 1 December 2026 for a programme running 19 May to 30 July 2027. Selection has two stages, a written application and a prerecorded interview, judged by CHCI alumni, board members and staff. Work authorisation is the hard gate: students on F-1 or M-1 visas cannot apply.

Kansas State University Scholarship 2027 - Up to $76,404
Kansas State University hands out its general university scholarships automatically. Apply for admission by the priority date and you are considered, with no essay and no separate scholarship form. Kansas residents sit on a five-step ladder running from the $1,000 a year 1863 Landmark Award up to the $5,000 a year University Scholar Award. Out-of-state and international freshmen are assessed for the Wildcat Non-Resident Award, which wipes out 50% to 100% of the non-resident portion of tuition and is estimated at $9,551 to $19,101 a year, or $38,204 to $76,404 across four years. Domestic freshmen starting in Fall 2027 apply by 1 December 2026, while transfer and international applicants work to 1 May 2027. Competitive awards such as the $80,000 Presidential Scholarship need a supplemental application by 5 p.m. on 15 December 2026.
