Horatio Alger Scholarship 2027 - $25,000 for Juniors

A need-based award from the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, a non-profit in Alexandria, Virginia that funds students who have overcome significant adversity. The flagship National Scholarship gives 105 students $25,000 each across all 50 states and DC, and the Association runs more than 70 programmes in total. What separates it from most large scholarships is the selection basis: adversity and perseverance carry the weight, not grades or test scores.

If you have a stepparent who is married to and files jointly with the legal parent you lived with for most of the previous 12 months, their income counts too. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and family friends are not treated as parents unless they legally adopted you.

A minimum of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, which you must maintain. Some individual programmes in the catalogue set 2.5 instead. The Association requires no minimum SAT or ACT score at all, so this is one of the few national awards at this size where standardised tests are simply not part of the picture. Both undergraduate windows open on 1 December 2026. High school juniors, who are the ones eligible for the $25,000 National Scholarship, have until 1 March 2027. High school seniors have until 15 February 2027 for the programmes open to them. Career and technical applications run separately from 15 March to 15 June, and graduate scholarships for existing Alger Scholars from 1 July to 31 August. Late applications are not accepted.

This is the single most common reason an otherwise strong applicant is ruled out.

The Association does not publish a checklist, which is deliberate. It funds students facing and overcoming significant adversities, and asks applicants to describe their circumstances in as much detail as possible so the committee sees a clear picture. Financial hardship, family illness, loss of a parent, homelessness, caregiving responsibilities and abuse all appear in scholars' stories. The test is not whether your experience fits a category but whether you can show what happened and how you kept going.

You nominate an adult over 21 who is not related to you and who knows the adversities you have written about, such as a neighbour, teacher, counselor, family friend or pastor. They receive an online form containing everything you wrote in the adversity section, confirm its accuracy, and may add comments about your ability to overcome those challenges. Once they submit, your adversity section locks and cannot be edited, so finish it before you send the request.

In April or May, by email and post, with a list of recipients also published online. Only successful applicants are contacted, so silence is the answer for everyone else. Disbursement information follows in May each year, and scholars request their funds online for the coming year rather than receiving them automatically. Money goes straight to the college and is credited to your student account.
