Knight Hennessy Scholarship 2027 - Stanford Full Funding
The Knight Hennessy Scholarship 2027 gives up to 100 new Stanford graduate students a fully funded place and a seat in a leadership programme that runs alongside their degree. Officially called Knight-Hennessy Scholars, it covers tuition and fees, a stipend for living and academic costs, an annual trip home and a one-time relocation payment for up to three years. You can use it for almost any Stanford graduate degree, from an MS in computer science to an MBA, a JD, an MD or a PhD, and there is no citizenship restriction. The catch is that you apply twice. The Knight-Hennessy application closes on 6 October 2026 at 1 pm Pacific Time, and your separate Stanford degree application has to be in by 1 December 2026 or the programme's own deadline, whichever comes first. Scholars are told on 16 March 2027 and start at Stanford in autumn 2027.
What is the Knight Hennessy Scholarship?
The Knight Hennessy Scholarship is Stanford's answer to the Rhodes: a fully funded graduate place with a leadership programme built around it. The official name is Knight-Hennessy Scholars, after Nike co-founder Phil Knight and former Stanford president John Hennessy. Unlike most university awards, it isn't tied to one department. A future lawyer, a doctor, an engineer and a composer can all end up in the same cohort, and that mix is the point.
The money is generous, but your degree still decides a lot. Knight-Hennessy pays tuition, a living stipend, a yearly flight and a relocation allowance for up to three years. If you are doing a two-year master's or an MBA, that covers the whole thing. For a five-year PhD or an MD, the programme funds the first three years and your department's normal support takes over after that. Stipends count as taxable income in the US, and the programme won't cover the tax.
The 2027 cycle has two deadlines you can't mix up. The Knight-Hennessy application closes on 6 October 2026 at 1 pm Pacific Time. Your Stanford degree application is separate and has to be in by 1 December 2026, or earlier if your programme's own deadline comes first. Miss that December date and your programme can still admit you, but the scholarship is gone. After October, about 500 applicants are invited in January to record a two-minute video, roughly 180 finalists are named on 27 January, and they fly to Stanford for Immersion Weekend on 5 and 6 March. Offers go out on 16 March 2027.
No GPA or test cutoff exists, which cuts both ways. A modest score won't sink you, but your essays and letters carry most of the weight. The committee asks for independence of thought, purposeful leadership and a civic mindset, and the eight improbable facts question is where a lot of applicants lose their nerve and play it safe. Don't. ✓Applying to an eligible Stanford graduate degreeThe award pairs with DMA, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MPP, MS and PhD programmes. The Honors Cooperative Program, Master of Liberal Arts, JSD and MLS do not qualify, and neither does a current PhD student adding an MA or MS in their own field.

✓Admission to your Stanford programmeKnight-Hennessy cannot admit you on its own. You must receive an offer from a Stanford graduate programme and enrol full time, and your degree application has to be filed by 1 December 2026 or the programme's earlier deadline.

Do I have to apply to Stanford separately?
Yes. You submit one application to Knight-Hennessy and another to your Stanford graduate programme, and the two committees decide separately. You cannot become a scholar without an admission offer from the programme. File the degree application by 1 December 2026 or the earlier programme deadline, or you lose your Knight-Hennessy eligibility.
Is there an application fee for Knight-Hennessy Scholars?
No. The Knight-Hennessy application is free. Your Stanford degree programme charges its own application fee, so check that separately.
What happens at Knight-Hennessy Immersion Weekend?
Immersion Weekend is the final stage for about 180 finalists. For the 2027 cohort it runs on 5 and 6 March 2027 at Stanford, after an online interview in mid-February. The programme pays for airfare, lodging at Stanford and meals on campus within university guidelines. Scholars are notified on 16 March 2027.
