What is the UMass Lowell Scholarship?

The UMass Lowell Scholarship is less a single prize than a set of automatic price cuts, sorted mostly by your home address. The university is blunt about the mechanism: it does not use applications for the selection of most merit scholarships. Nobody reads a scholarship essay, because nobody asks for one. You apply for admission, a review reads your academic record against the rest of the applicant pool, and the number arrives inside your offer letter. For a lot of applicants that is a relief. For a few it is a trap, because the one thing you can control, the date you apply, is the thing most people leave until January.

Start with your own tier, since the gaps between them are large. A Massachusetts resident is in the running for the Chancellor's Scholarship, an annual award of full tuition and mandatory fees, or the Dean's Scholarship at up to half of the same. Both carry the same condition: the admission application has to meet the Early Action deadline. An out-of-state, national or international student is reviewed for $8,000 to $20,000 a year. Elsewhere in New England the band is $8,000 to $14,000, and for New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania it is $5,000 to $13,000. Transfers have a parallel ladder, from a $3,000 in-state award up to $20,000 for out-of-state and international students, with a $1,000 Phi Theta Kappa award on a 3.500 GPA and a $1,454 tuition credit through the state MAPP programme. Two odd ones sit outside the pattern. The Tsongas Scholarship covers tuition, fees and standard housing and food, but only two exist and only Lowell High School graduates are eligible. The Project Lead The Way award is worth up to $5,000 in-state and $10,000 out-of-state on a 3.0 high school GPA.

Set the numbers against the bill and the picture sharpens. For 2026-27 UMass Lowell publishes in-state tuition and fees at $18,252, the New England regional rate at $29,008, out-of-state at $37,460, and international at $42,077 once the heavier $5,467 fee load is counted. Add housing at roughly $11,402 and food at $6,080 and the full on-campus cost of attendance lands near $38,402 in-state and $57,610 out-of-state. So a $20,000 award is real money that still leaves a gap, and the honest framing is partial funding rather than a free ride. The exception is the Chancellor's award, where tuition and fees disappear entirely and only living costs remain.

International students should read this page more closely than most. Unlike some large public universities that quietly fence their merit money off from visa holders, UMass Lowell puts international applicants in the same $8,000 to $20,000 band as domestic out-of-state students, with no citizenship test attached. Master's students have a second route through the Graduate International Excellence Scholarship, worth $1,000 to $5,000 a semester and up to $20,000 across four semesters, or $25,000 across five for the Master of Public Health. It expects international tuition residency, valid F-1 status, and full-time on-campus study, counted as at least two on-campus courses and one online course a semester. It also will not stack with an assistantship or with NIOSH, NSF or Fulbright funding, so if a department offers you funded work, treat that as an either-or decision. Students from Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Mexico have a third option in the Graduate Scholarship for Emerging Leaders in Latin America, up to $20,000, or $25,000 for MPH students over five semesters, awarded on a demonstrated commitment to advancing science, technology, leadership and management in the region.

The calendar is the part worth acting on today. Early Action I closes 5 November 2026 for Fall 2027 entry, and that is the round the Chancellor's and Dean's awards are tied to. Early Action II follows on 15 January 2027, Regular Decision on 15 February, and the FAFSA priority date on 1 March. Graduate applicants chasing the international awards work to 15 January for fall entry and 15 July of the prior year for spring. Nursing applicants have to use one of the two Early Action rounds.
