GEM Fellowship Program 2026 - Funded MS & PhD in STEM
The GEM Fellowship Program 2026 is open now, and it works differently from most graduate funding: the National GEM Consortium does not simply write you a cheque, it matches you with an employer and a university that between them cover the degree. Take the master's track as an Employer Fellow and you get full tuition and fees from a GEM member university, a stipend of at least $16,000 across the programme, and up to two paid summer internships with the company sponsoring you. On the PhD track it is at least $16,000 a year, tuition and fees covered up to the fifth year, at least one paid summer internship, and the university tops your stipend up to whatever its other funded doctoral students in that department receive. Two other routes exist, University Fellows and Associate Fellows, but those are nominated by the university rather than chosen by you. The catch is the workload. Alongside the GEM application you have to apply directly to a minimum of three GEM member universities' STEM graduate departments, by their own deadlines or 15 January at the latest, and no fellowship is awarded until one of them confirms in writing that it will fund you. You also sign up contractually to intern for your sponsoring employer for 10 to 12 weeks each qualifying summer. What is the GEM Fellowship Program?
The GEM Fellowship Program is a matchmaking operation as much as a funding one. The National GEM Consortium, based at 1430 Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia, sits between engineering and science students, dozens of member universities, and the companies that want to hire technical graduates. Rather than handing out money from its own endowment, GEM lines up a sponsor on each side: a member university that covers tuition and fees, and an employer member that funds your stipend and brings you in for paid summers. Get through the process as an Employer Fellow and your degree is paid for by people who already have a reason to want you in the field.
The numbers differ by track. A master's Employer Fellow gets full tuition and fees plus a stipend of at least $16,000 across the whole programme, and up to two paid internships of 10 to 12 weeks each with the sponsoring company. A PhD Employer Fellow gets at least $16,000 a year with the member university topping it up to match other funded doctoral students in the department, tuition and fees covered up to the fifth year, and at least one paid summer with the employer. Read the PhD structure carefully though, because only the first year is remitted by GEM itself. From year two onward the university carries the funding through assistantships, institutional awards or other external fellowships, and continuation depends on you staying in good academic standing and making satisfactory progress. Two other categories exist, University Fellows and Associate Fellows, and Associate Fellows do well on paper with full tuition and at least $8,000 a year for a master's or $16,000 for a PhD. You cannot apply for either. Universities nominate those fellows, so the door you knock on is the employer one.
What makes this application heavier than most is that it is really two applications running in parallel. The GEM application goes through eGEM and needs a statement of purpose of at least a page, an unofficial transcript, a résumé, and at least two of your three requested recommendations submitted online. Separately, and GEM uses the words absolute requirement, you have to apply directly to a minimum of three GEM member universities' STEM graduate departments by their own deadlines or 15 January, whichever comes first. Those application fees are yours, although some member universities waive them for GEM applicants, so it is worth checking the membership listing before paying three times. Being admitted still is not the finish line: a university representative has to confirm in writing that the fellowship can be used there and that the department will fund you, and departments sometimes cap how many GEM Fellows they take in a year.
For the 2026 cycle the window opened on 1 July and closes at 11:59 PM Eastern on 13 November 2026, the second Friday in November, which is the rule GEM applies every year rather than a date it picks fresh. After that the selection committee meets in mid-November, and from December through to the following June employer members reach out to eligible applicants for internship interviews and sponsorship decisions.
