The eligibility rule is the part people misread, so be blunt about it with yourself. Berea is the only college in America that exclusively serves students with high financial need, which means a strong transcript will not save an application from a household that earns too much. The published 2025-2026 ranges put a two-parent household of four in the primary range below $56,000 in adjusted gross income, extending consideration up to $86,000; a single-parent household of four sits below $72,000, extending to $102,000. Independent students, including veterans, those who have been in foster care or legal guardianship, and those supporting their own children, usually meet the criteria. Watch one wrinkle: the same College page also prints an older household income table with different numbers, so run the estimator rather than trusting a single row. Academically there is no minimum GPA, though you need the top three fifths of your class where rank is reported, admission is test-optional, and anyone who does send scores must clear 19 on the ACT or 980 on the SAT with subscores of 17 and 460.
Then there is the work, which is not a detail. Berea is one of ten federally recognised Work Colleges, every student holds a paid campus job of at least 10 hours a week across more than 130 departments, and you leave with a work transcript next to your academic one. International applicants get the same funding promise, covering 100 per cent of tuition, housing, food and fees, and can work in the Labor Program without a work permit, most logging 15 to 20 hours and earning over $2,000 a year.
