NIAF Scholarship 2027 - $2,500 to $12,000 Awards

Awards range from $2,500 to $12,000 depending on which fund you are matched to, and the Foundation states it has awarded over $10,000,000 in scholarships since its founding. The structure is what makes it worth your time: you fill in one application, and it matches you against every named fund you qualify for. Some are broad, some are narrow, and the narrow ones are where the real odds sit. There are funds for business majors, computer science and STEM students, music students from New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, law students, first-generation college students, students studying Italian language at university level, and students from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Florida and the Midwest. Four gates apply to everyone: an active NIAF membership, a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, US citizenship or permanent resident status, and full-time enrollment at an accredited US institution for Fall 2027. The application reopens on 1 December 2026 and closes at 11:59 p.m. EST on 1 March 2027, with decisions emailed on 3 May 2027.
What is the NIAF Scholarship 2027?
The NIAF Scholarship 2027 is the National Italian American Foundation's yearly scholarship programme, and it works differently from most awards you will apply to. There is no single prize with a single set of rules. Instead the Foundation runs a collection of named funds, each endowed by a donor with their own idea of who should benefit, and you meet all of them through one application. Fill that application in accurately and the system matches you to every fund you qualify for. Awards run from $2,500 to $12,000, and NIAF says it has put more than $10,000,000 into scholarships since it was founded.
That structure is the reason the programme is worth a serious afternoon of your time. The broad funds attract everybody, but the narrow ones are where a well-matched applicant has real odds. Look at how specific some of them get. The Furci Family Scholarship Fund pays $5,000 to $10,000 to a student taking 10 or more credits of Italian language or Italian studies. The Richard Perrone Scholarship wants a computer science student attending school in Connecticut. The Salvatore Catanese Clark County Scholarship wants a graduate of a Clark County, Nevada high school, with preference for Sicilian heritage, and it renews for up to four years. There are funds tied to Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Florida and the Midwest, funds for music students from New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, funds for law students, for first-generation college students, for female undergraduates in English or journalism, and for business students at Pepperdine. If one of those descriptions reads like your life, your competition just shrank considerably.
Four gates apply no matter which fund you land in. You need an active NIAF membership, though a parent, guardian or grandparent's membership counts and the levels start at $25. You need to be a US citizen or permanent resident alien, which closes the programme to international students on F-1 or J-1 visas regardless of Italian ancestry. You need full-time enrollment at an accredited US institution for Fall 2027, with incoming freshmen counted as long as they have been accepted. And you need a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, with a few funds accepting less and pass-fail grading accepted. On top of that, applicants must show a commitment to or interest in Italian culture and heritage, and some individual funds set their own heritage tests, such as the Donald Mazzoni Scholarship asking for at least 50 per cent Italian American heritage. Who can apply is refreshingly wide otherwise: high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate students, doctoral candidates, medical students and law students, with no age limit at all.
Two practical points before you start. The money is restricted more tightly than most applicants assume, since it can only go toward tuition or housing billed through your student account, never books or supplies, and never a summer programme. And the deadline is a genuine wall: the application reopens on 1 December 2026 and closes at 11:59 p.m. EST on 1 March 2027, with every supporting document, recommendation letters included, due at that same moment rather than a grace period afterward. Decisions reach every applicant by email on 3 May 2027. One figure deserves a caveat. NIAF's scholarship page says it administers nearly 200 scholarships annually, while its own FAQ page says it receives 1,500 to 3,000 applications a year and awards between 50 and 100, so if the odds matter to your planning, email [email protected] and ask. ✓Active NIAF membershipYou must hold an active National Italian American Foundation membership when you apply, and you may instead use the membership of a parent, guardian or grandparent. Memberships run for 365 days from the day you sign up, are non-refundable, and range from $25 to $2,500 across the membership levels, with a discounted student rate available. The membership login and the scholarship application login are two separate accounts, so do not expect one to open the other.

✓US citizen or permanent resident alienThe Foundation limits the programme to United States citizens and permanent resident aliens. International students are not eligible, so F-1 and J-1 visa holders cannot apply even when they are enrolled at a US university and even where they have Italian ancestry. This is a hard gate and it is stated on the Foundation's own eligibility list.

✓Full-time enrollment for Fall 2027You need to be enrolled at a US accredited institution of higher education on a full-time basis for the Fall 2027 semester. Students who have been accepted but have not yet started count, which is why incoming freshmen can apply. If you win, the Foundation asks for proof of full-time enrollment before it releases funds.

✓GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0The general academic floor is a GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 or the equivalent. A handful of individual funds set a lower bar, for example the Donald Mazzoni Scholarship asks for 3.0, so a student just under 3.5 is not automatically shut out of everything. Students graded on a pass-fail system are eligible too.

✓Commitment to or interest in Italian culture and heritageApplicants must demonstrate a commitment to or an interest in Italian culture and heritage. Several individual funds go further and set their own heritage tests: the Donald Mazzoni Scholarship, for one, asks for at least 50 per cent Italian American heritage. Others simply prefer applicants with Italian American heritage over those without it.

✓High school senior through doctoral studentAny high school senior, undergraduate, graduate or doctoral student may apply, and that includes students in medical school and law school. There is no minimum or maximum age, and students returning to university later than the traditional age are eligible. What the Foundation does not fund is private high school education.

Who is eligible for the NIAF Scholarship?
Five things have to be true. You hold an active NIAF membership or apply under a parent, guardian or grandparent's. You are a US citizen or permanent resident alien. You will be enrolled full time at a US accredited institution for the Fall 2027 semester. Your GPA is at least 3.5 out of 4.0 or the equivalent, though some funds accept lower and pass-fail grading is fine. And you can demonstrate a commitment to or interest in Italian culture and heritage. High school seniors, undergraduates, graduate students, doctoral students, medical students and law students may all apply, with no age limit.
Do I have to be a NIAF member to apply for a scholarship?
Yes. You must be a NIAF member yourself, or have a parent, guardian or grandparent who is a dues-paying member. Memberships are available at any level from niaf.org/join, run for 365 days from the date you sign up, and are non-refundable. The Foundation lists membership levels from $25 to $2,500 and offers a discounted Sustaining rate for students and teachers. Keep in mind that your membership login is not the same account as your scholarship application login on Community Force.
When is the NIAF Scholarship 2027 deadline?
The application for the 2027-2028 academic year reopens on 1 December 2026 and closes at 11:59 p.m. EST on 1 March 2027. Supporting documents carry that identical deadline, so a recommendation letter arriving on 2 March leaves the file incomplete. Decision notifications go out by email on 3 May 2027 at 5:00 p.m. EDT, to every applicant rather than only the winners.
Can international students apply for the NIAF Scholarship?
No. NIAF limits the programme to United States citizens and permanent resident aliens, so students on F-1 or J-1 visas cannot apply even when enrolled at a US university and even where they have Italian ancestry. Italian nationals are not eligible on the strength of Italian citizenship either. The one place the picture shifts is study abroad: if you are a US citizen or permanent resident studying in Italy during the academic year through a US-based accredited institution such as NYU or Berkeley, you remain eligible, while enrolling directly at a non-US institution such as the University of Bologna takes you out of the programme.
How many NIAF scholarships are awarded each year?
The Foundation's figures do not line up neatly, so treat this as a range rather than a promise. Its scholarship page says NIAF administers nearly 200 scholarships annually, while its own FAQ page says the Foundation receives between 1,500 and 3,000 applications each year and awards between 50 and 100 scholarships depending on available funds. The gap may come down to counting named funds against awards actually granted in a given year. Either way the programme is competitive, and NIAF describes the evaluation as rigorous. What can NIAF scholarship money be used for?
Tuition, or housing billed through your student account. That is the whole list. The Foundation states plainly that the funds cannot go toward books or supplies, and they cannot be applied to a summer programme, since awards cover the academic year. Winners are asked to show proof of full-time enrollment before funds are released. Awards are not automatically renewable either, unless your acceptance paperwork specifically designates the fund as renewable, as the two Salvatore Catanese scholarships do for up to four years. Past winners are welcome to apply again in a later cycle.
